The upcoming Korean zombie film “Colony” brings together an impressive cast, but one of the most interesting relationships involves Go Soo playing the ex-husband of Jun Ji Hyun‘s character. The movie marks Jun Ji Hyun‘s return to the big screen after 11 years, since her last film “Assassination” in 2015.
“Colony” comes from director Yeon Sang Ho, who previously made “Train to Busan,” one of the most popular zombie movies ever. The film follows survivors trapped inside a building after a strange virus breaks out. The infected keep changing in unpredictable ways, making the situation even more dangerous.
Jun Ji Hyun Returns As Survivor Leader Kwon Se Jeong
Jun Ji Hyun plays Kwon Se Jeong, a biotechnology professor who becomes the leader of the survivor group. She is described as someone who stands up against wrong things, which costs her a professor position. Her ex-husband Han Gyu Sung, played by Go Soo, suggests she attend a conference for a new job opportunity. This decision leads to disaster when the virus hits the building where the conference takes place.
As a biotech expert, Kwon Se Jeong uses her knowledge to study how the infected behave and change. She works to find a way for everyone to escape while dealing with the growing threat inside the sealed building.
The actress shared why she chose this project after so many years away from movies. She said:
“I was already a huge fan of director Yeon Sang Ho, and above all, the well-written ‘Colony’ script felt incredibly compelling.”
Go Soo Plays The Ex-Husband Who Sets The Story In Motion
Go Soo takes on the role of Han Gyu Sung, the ex-husband of Jun Ji Hyun‘s character and also a biotech professor. His suggestion for his ex-wife to attend the conference directly leads to her being trapped inside the infected building. This family connection adds personal stakes to the survival story.
The film shows how past relationships become complicated when people face life-and-death situations. Han Gyu Sung must deal with the guilt of putting his ex-wife in danger while also fighting to survive alongside her and others.
Star-Studded Cast Joins The Survival Fight
“Colony” features a strong ensemble cast beyond Jun Ji Hyun and Go Soo. Koo Kyo Hwan plays Seo Young Cheol, a brilliant biologist who has unusual views about the infected and almost wishes for a new kind of humanity to appear. Ji Chang Wook takes the role of Choi Hyun Seok, a security team member trapped in the building with his sister.
Kim Shin Rock plays Choi Hyun Hee, the sister with a lower-body disability who uses a wheelchair. Shin Hyun Bin appears as Professor Gong Seol Hee, another biotech expert who holds important clues about solving the crisis from outside the building.
Jun Ji Hyun talked about working with Kim Shin Rock:
“Kim Shin-rock and I are the same age. Meeting a female actor of my generation on set was rare and inspiring. She’s someone I learned from.”
Director Yeon Sang Ho Returns To Zombie Genre With New Twists
Yeon Sang Ho, known for “Train to Busan,” “Peninsula,” and the series “Hellbound,” brings new ideas to the zombie genre with “Colony.” The infected in this film are different from regular zombies. They start on four legs and can evolve to move on two legs, making them harder to predict and fight.
The director explained some differences from his earlier work:
“Unlike ‘Train to Busan’ or ‘Peninsula,’ ‘Colony’ features zombies that are primitive and quadrupedal. Their evolution speed and methods differ from humans, creating terror.”
The film takes place mostly inside one sealed building, which makes the situation feel tighter and more intense for the survivors. There is no easy way out, and the infected keep getting stronger.
Jun Ji Hyun shared her experience filming the intense scenes:
“The raw energy on set was authentic. Preparing felt calculated, so I embraced the rawness. Leading survivors was challenging, especially with Hyun-hee (Kim Shin-rock). In reality, I might have abandoned her, but my character couldn’t.”
First Meeting Between Director And Star Was Memorable
Director Yeon Sang Ho remembered the first time he met Jun Ji Hyun to discuss the film. He described the meeting as something special. He said:
“When we met at a cafe, I thought, ‘Why isn’t the movie playing?’ because I suddenly saw a movie star. The air felt cinematic just with her presence.”
He praised her acting range, noting that few actors can show such a wide spectrum of emotions. He added that in “Colony,” she brings together all her skills—sometimes cynical, sometimes playful, sometimes very serious—all in one role.
