Comedian Daniel Fernandes has joined the list of celebrities criticising Bhumi Pednekar over her recent comments on the CJP-led student protests in Delhi. During a stand-up show, Fernandes mocked the actor for what he called an attempt to stay relevant and questioned her understanding of Indian culture.
The controversy began when Bhumi Pednekar posted a video on Instagram criticising protesters for using abusive language against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the CJP protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The protest was organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and other examination irregularities.
Daniel Fernandes Questions Bhumi’s Motive During Stand-Up Show
During his recent stand-up performance, Daniel Fernandes did not hold back while talking about Bhumi Pednekar’s video. He said:
“Bhumi Pednekar woke up one morning and decided to be relevant again. So, she posted a video where she is like, ‘Hey guys, it is okay to protest and all that, but what is this language? This bad, abusive language is not part of our culture.’ Not part of our culture? What are you, French?”
The comedian then went on to explain how the word “culture” is often used to control people. He added:
“Remembering mothers and sisters is a national pastime. This is what society does: every time they do not like something that you say or do, they will try to shame you by saying that this is not part of our culture and culture is spelled as ‘CONTROL’. I don’t understand what is up with this a** kissing.”
Fernandes also took a swipe at TV actor Sudesh Berry, who recently said in an interview that he wanted to wash the Prime Minister’s feet and drink that water. The comedian joked:
“He has not understood Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.”
What Bhumi Pednekar Actually Said in Her Video
Bhumi Pednekar shared a video on Instagram where she expressed her concerns about the language used by some protesters during the CJP-led demonstration. She said:
“Looking at the videos surfacing now, the kind of language being used, and the way the youth of our country are speaking — the youth of our country… this isn’t how we talk, man. We are talking about someone who holds the highest office in the land today. And it’s not just about the office; would we ever speak like this to the elders in our own homes? Can we really resort to using abusive language?”
She further added:
“Guys, this isn’t our culture; it’s wrong, and this really bothered me — that’s why I wanted to come forward and address this: a country will only progress and move forward when, collectively and unitedly, we discuss our flaws as well as the good things.”
Backlash Over Bhumi’s Comments
Bhumi Pednekar faced heavy criticism after her video went viral. Many people on social media questioned why she chose to speak about the protesters’ language instead of supporting their demand for education reforms.
The CJP protest was organised by students demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following the NEET paper leak controversy. Thousands of students had gathered at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar to raise their voices against alleged irregularities in the examination system.
Critics pointed out that Bhumi remained silent on the issues that students were fighting for, including alleged police action against protesters. Instead, they said, she focused only on the language used by some protesters.
Other Celebrities Who Spoke Out
Bhumi Pednekar is not the only celebrity to face backlash over this issue. Singer Neha Bhasin also criticised the actor, saying she should have spoken against police excesses instead. Bhasin posted on social media:
“Chup rehna best hai behen” (It is best to keep quiet, sister).
Bhasin added that she would have respected the Prime Minister more if he had condemned the police for their behaviour towards women during the protests.
Actor Dia Mirza also appeared to respond to Bhumi’s remarks with a strong statement on social media.

The CJP protest in Delhi was held over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak. Students and parents had been demonstrating at Jantar Mantar for over a month, demanding accountability and education reforms.
