Curry Barker, the filmmaker behind the surprise horror hit Obsession, has already made his move toward working with Nathan Fielder. The director told Variety that after watching Fielder’s Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything, he reached out to the filmmaker about teaming up. The pitch happened around the Time100 Next Gala at Pier59 Studios in New York City on the night of October 29, 2026, where both men were among the honorees. Barker’s words were simple and direct: he “put it out in the water.” No deal has been announced, and Fielder has not publicly responded to the idea.
What Curry Barker Said About You Can See Everything
Barker did not hold back his feelings about the film. Speaking to Variety at the gala, he described his reaction in plain terms.
“I thought it was freakin’ insane and awesome. I didn’t know much about [Elizabeth Holmes’] story going into it. I feel like I missed certain tiny things, but it was three hours long and I wished it was longer. That’s rare, you know?”
The documentary runs 174 minutes, just under three hours, and covers the final weeks before Holmes began her prison sentence. Barker said the film felt different from anything he had seen before.
“It felt new, fresh, different. You almost can’t even call it a documentary, but it totally is. I’m just a huge fan of what [Fielder] is doing.”
When asked whether he would want to collaborate with Fielder, Barker confirmed he had already raised the subject face to face.
“I told him that. I said, ‘Hey!’ โฆ I just put it out in the water.”
Why Obsession Made Curry Barker a Name to Watch
Barker’s path to that conversation is unusual. The 26-year-old started as a TikTok comedian and is one half of the comedy duo That’s a Bad Idea. Obsession was his first feature film, made for a reported budget of just $750,000. The horror-romance premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was picked up by Focus Features for worldwide rights, with Universal Pictures International handling distribution abroad.
The box office numbers turned the film into one of the year’s biggest stories. Obsession crossed $400 million globally by early July 2026, with $245.3 million from North America and $157.7 million from international markets. By late October, the film had passed $500 million worldwide. It became the only wide-release horror film to grow in its second weekend, rising 30% to $22.4 million, a detail shared by Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum on X.
Barker’s next film is already set. Anything But Ghosts will arrive in theaters on May 7, 2027, from Focus Features, with Bryce Dallas Howard, Aaron Paul, Violet McGraw, and Chris Reinacher in the cast.
A Documentary That Blurs the Line Between Real and Staged
You Can See Everything is not a standard documentary. Directed by Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, the film follows Holmes in the 34 days before she reported to federal prison to serve an 11-year sentence for defrauding Theranos investors. Holmes and her partner Billy Evans invited the filmmakers into their California beach house. The film also includes dramatized scenes and appearances by Amanda Seyfried, who played Holmes in the Hulu series The Dropout, and actor Christopher Abbott.
The A24 release opened in US and Canadian theaters on October 16, 2026, after a surprise premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and a screening at the New York Film Festival. It holds a 98% critics score and a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is set to close the Stockholm Film Festival in November 2026, the same month it opens in international theaters. An India release date has not been announced, though Sony Pictures Worldwide has acquired distribution rights in some international regions, including India. Australian theaters will get the film on November 12, 2026.
The Moment Emma Watson Left Curry Barker Frozen
The gala also gave Barker a brush with one of his childhood heroes. He told Variety that meeting Emma Watson threw him off completely.
“I was a huge Harry Potter fan growing up, and I saw Emma Watson and I froze. It’s so weird, I’m meeting all of these people that I really look up to, but there’s something different about when it’s someone from your childhood that really means a lot. That changes where you’re like, ‘Oh, woah.’ I was totally weird to her. I was trying to play it cool. But I did not play it cool.”
Barker was honored at Time100 Next alongside Raye, Druski, Paapa Essiedu, and other rising names in entertainment. Raye opened the night with a jazz version of Cry Me a River and Happier Times Ahead.

What Nathan Fielder Has Said About His Own Film
Fielder has been open about the unusual access he and Oppenheim received. He told Wired that Holmes called him from prison shortly before the film’s release and repeated the words “I trust you” several times. The film has also drawn attention for its awards chances. Variety reported that A24 is running a campaign that could make it the first documentary in Oscar history to be nominated for Best Picture. It has already earned nominations at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards for Best Documentary Feature, Director, Cinematography, Editing, and Score.
Fan Reactions to the Possible Pairing
Social media users picked up on the pitch quickly. One post on X framed the idea with a joke about Fielder’s style of comedy: “Pitching Nathan Fielder a collaboration is either a brilliant idea or the start of a very long, very awkward bit”. Another user shared the Culture Crave post about Barker’s comment, quoting his line “I put it out in the water”. The reaction was mixed, with some excited about the pairing and others joking that the idea should stay in the water.
