The second cour of Daemons of the Shadow Realm started with a bang on July 4, 2026. Episode 13, titled “Daikyo and Shokyo,” delivered one of the most brutal episodes of the series so far. Higashi Village Suffers Another Tragedy
The attack on Higashi Village in Episode 13 is devastating. Bodies are scattered across the village. A shaman lies dead with strange markings carved into his skin. The adult population of the village has been almost completely wiped out. Since almost all the adults are related to the twins, Yuru and Asa, this leaves a very large number of young children without parents.
The emotional weight of this scene is heavy. Viewers see orphaned children wandering through the burned-out buildings. The village that was once Yuru’s home is now a place of death and sorrow. This tragedy creates one of the most intense emotional moments in the entire series.
Ivan’s goal in this attack is to kidnap the fake Asa. She is a daemon contracted to Yamaha, the old woman of the village. Ivan threatens to kill the grandmother to force fake Asa to come with him. He also needs her face, so he can use it as leverage against Yuru. Ivan takes fake Asa and a young village girl named Azami as his prisoners.
Azami’s Trauma and Ivan’s Cruelty
One of the most disturbing parts of Episode 13 involves a young girl named Azami. She watched her own mother get beheaded during the massacre. She is the most traumatized survivor of the attack. Ivan takes her as a prisoner along with fake Asa.
It is deeply unsettling to see Ivan keep a traumatized child as a hostage. Azami is dealing with immense grief and an uncertain future. This subplot adds a very personal and intense element to the episode. Ivan’s motives are clear. He wants to use these hostages to control Yuru. He does not care about the suffering he causes.
After killing the shaman, Ivan carves a ransom note into his chest. The message threatens Yuru. Ivan says that if Yuru does not come to him, he will harm fake Asa and the little girl he kidnapped. Hana sees the writing and realizes she may not be able to live a normal life anymore.
Yama’s Death Leaves the Village Exposed
The shaman Yama meets a terrible end in this episode. Ivan cuts Yama in half and carves a message into his corpse. This brutal act serves as a warning to Yuru and everyone else who might try to stop Ivan.
Yama’s death also leaves Higashi Village in a very vulnerable position. Yama was forced to guide Ivan off the mountain. With Yama gone, the village has no one to protect it from future attacks. The cliffhanger ending makes viewers desperate to watch the next episode.
Danji’s Journey to the Modern World
While tragedy unfolds in Higashi Village, another storyline follows Danji, Yuru’s best friend from the village. Danji is sent down the mountain by his mother. He ends up meeting an elderly daemon-user named Oshira. She picks him up and takes him on a high-speed magical horse ride into the modern world.
This part of the episode provides some relief from the darkness of the village massacre. The contrast between the rural tragedy and the high-speed chase is very noticeable. Danji ends up running on a modern road. Since daemons are invisible to most people, Danji looks like a very odd sight to anyone watching him.
This subplot has a lighter tone and gives viewers some breathing room. It also suggests that Danji’s journey will mirror Yuru’s path in some way. Danji is voiced by Ryouta Ohsaka, which adds to the appeal of his character. Oshira offers Danji a lift to Tokyo, mainly because she wants to go there herself.
Fake Asa’s Hidden Feelings for Yuru
Episode 13 adds more mystery to the character of fake Asa. Viewers learn that she has kept a small ball from Yuru for years. Even though she has been lying to him for a long time, her feelings toward him seem more real than her actions suggest.
