The end is near for Amazon Prime Video’s hit superhero series The Boys. The fifth and final season started streaming on April 8, 2026, and fans are getting ready for the series finale on May 20, 2026. Erin Moriarty, who plays Annie January (Starlight), recently opened up about what viewers can expect from the last episode. She did not hold back when sharing her honest thoughts about the emotional ending.

Moriarty spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the final season. She called the last episode a “heartbreaking episode” that will leave audiences feeling deeply moved. The actress said she has never been this sure about a finale before. She feels very confident that the writers gave the show a proper sendoff.

“It’s a heartbreaking episode. It’s not overtly cynical. When I read the finale as a script, it was my favorite episode this season, as it should be. I think the audience is going to be so immensely satisfied by the finale.”

The final season of The Boys has been running since early April. New episodes drop every Wednesday on Prime Video. The season has eight episodes total. Fans in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India can all watch on the same weekly schedule. The show follows Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and his team as they try to stop Homelander (Antony Starr) from taking over the world with his Supe army.

Moriarty Opens Up About Health Struggles During Filming

The actress also shared a personal story about her health during the making of season five. In June 2025, Moriarty told the public about her Graves’ disease diagnosis. She found out about the condition halfway through filming the final season. Looking back, she said the symptoms explained why she felt so tired and sick during production.

Moriarty admitted she felt like she was “offline” for the first six or seven episodes. The chronic fatigue and nausea made it hard for her to give her best performance. She said this was very painful for her because she loves her character Annie.

“It did lead to me not being as present for Annie during this final season as I would’ve hoped, and that was super painful for me. I thought, Oh my God, I’m failing Annie and I’m failing our audience.”

After getting treatment, Moriarty said she finally felt present again by the end of season five. She wanted to share her story to help others with autoimmune diseases. The actress said she has no problem talking about her health because it is important to raise awareness.

Fans Can Expect Major Character Deaths and Emotional Goodbyes

Moriarty warned that the finale will be shocking. But she said that by the time episode eight arrives, audiences will already have seen so many surprising moments. The show’s creator Eric Kripke has said openly that “no one is safe” in this final season.

The star explained that The Boys has always been about characters who are nuanced. They are not simply good or bad. This makes losing any character feel emotional, even the ones viewers thought they hated.

“The point of the show is that these characters are nuanced. They aren’t black and white. So the losses of characters that you thought you weren’t rooting for can all of a sudden be emotional because no one is all bad and no one is all good on this show.”

Karl Urban, who plays Butcher, said the cast knew this was the end while filming. He said they did not take anything for granted. Laz Alonso (Mother’s Milk) added that the team wanted to leave “no money on the table.” They aimed to give fans everything they had wanted to see over the past five seasons.

The Season 5 Storyline So Far

The final season picks up right after the events of season four. Homelander has set up a fascist dictatorship. The Boys are scattered and imprisoned in camps. Butcher shows up with a virus that can kill every Supe on the planet. The official synopsis from Prime Video says this virus will change the world forever.

The first two episodes of season five arrived on April 8. Episode three dropped on April 15. Episode four came out on April 22. Fans still have four more episodes to go before the finale on May 20. The weekly release schedule has given viewers time to process each new development.

Social media reactions to the season have been mixed but mostly positive. Some fans on X (formerly Twitter) called the first two episodes a “banger start” and “elite television.” Others felt some episodes were weaker than expected. One person wrote that the show is “darker than ever” and keeps viewers emotionally locked in by the end of each episode.

What Makes the Finale Different From Other Shows

Moriarty said the finale does something different from what most TV shows do. She explained that it is not overly dark or hopeless. The word she kept using was “heartbreaking.” She believes audiences will feel the weight of saying goodbye to these characters.

The actress also talked about how the show sometimes predicts real-world events. She said she is surprised every season when she looks back and sees how the show mirrored actual news. Karen Fukuhara (Kimiko) agreed with her, saying “every episode” has that effect.

Jensen Ackles, who plays Soldier Boy, hinted that season five checks off many boxes. He said there are a lot of things fans have been waiting to see happen. The cast seems confident that the ending will feel right for the story they have been telling since 2019.

The finale of The Boys season 5 will stream on Prime Video on May 20, 2026. Fans around the world can watch the episode at the same time. For viewers in the USA, that means a late night release on May 19 depending on time zone. UK viewers will get it early morning on May 20. Indian audiences can watch it during the day on May 20.
