What Happened in Episode 9: “The Calm Before”
The penultimate episode, “The Calm Before,” pushed almost every major storyline to a breaking point and left fans with plenty to worry about before the finale.
The Man in Yellow and the Ritual: The episode revealed that the Man in Yellow, who had been disguised as Sophia (Julia Doyle), was actively working to sabotage the town’s escape plan. He revealed himself to Clara (Katerina Bakolias) to cash in on a prior bargain, and the two performed a blood ritual, allowing his influence to spread. Clara then poisoned Fatima (Pegah Ghafoori), delivering a drink laced with her tainted blood.
The Plan: After Tabitha (Catalina Sandino Moreno) revealed that the talismans didn’t stop the Man in Yellow, Boyd (Harold Perrineau) finally agreed to Jade’s (David Alpay) plan. This involves going into the underground tunnels to retrieve the bones of the Anghkooey children. Tabitha also became convinced that only she and Jade should be the ones to go down there, a notion that seemed to be the “ritual” element that the Man in Yellow feared.
Victor’s Warning and Elgin’s Discovery: Victor (Scott McCord) was warned by the Boy in White that destroying the Bottle Tree is dangerous. When Victor tried to stop the plan, Boyd had him arrested and locked up. Meanwhile, Elgin (Nathan D. Simmons) discovered an old photograph that proved Sophia had been in the town in a previous cycle. He confronted her, only to have her reveal that she can only take the form of people who have died in the town. After this shocking reveal, it is strongly implied that she killed Elgin.
