Netflix’s new psychological thriller Notes from the Last Row has arrived, and its ending reveals a story much darker than a simple mentor-student relationship. The limited series, which premiered on June 26, 2026, stars Choi Min-sik as Professor Heo Mun-oh and Choi Hyun-wook as the mysterious student Lee Kang. It is loosely based on the Spanish play El chico de la รบltima fila by Juan Mayorga.
The six-episode drama follows a jaded literature professor who discovers a student’s raw writing talent. He offers to mentor him, hoping to nurture Kang’s potential. But the student’s stories begin to include people from Mun-oh’s own lifeโhis rival and the woman he loves. What follows is a dangerous obsession that exposes the professor’s deepest insecurities and secrets.
The Big Reveal: Kang’s Story Was a Complete Fabrication
The ending of Notes from the Last Row reveals that everything Kang had been telling Mun-oh through his daily writing assignments was part of a carefully planned lie. He became Mun-oh’s gifted student who used to submit intriguing stories about a boy named Se-yun and his familyโa family that turned out to be Mun-oh’s rival’s.
In Kang’s story, he claimed Se-yun’s father, Su-hun, was having an affair with the housekeeper, Min-hui. Su-hun supposedly killed Min-hui because she tried to expose him for stealing a novel written by her late sister. Kang also wrote that Se-yun witnessed the crime and wanted his father punished, but his sister stopped him because exposing Su-hun would destroy her own reputation as a successful author.
Believing every word, Mun-oh rushed to save Eun-joo (Su-hun’s wife and Mun-oh’s college crush), only to discover that nothing Kang had described had actually happened. The entire murder story was fabricatedโeveryone was alive. The only true parts were that Kang had deliberately chosen Se-yun because he was the son of Mun-oh’s longtime rival, and that Eun-joo was the woman Mun-oh loved for years.
Why Kang Destroyed Mun-oh: A 12-Year Grudge
The series reveals the shocking reason behind Kang’s actions. Twelve years earlier, as a child living in an orphanage, Kang met Mun-oh, who inspired him to express his painful memories through writing. This helped Kang heal, and he began to admire Mun-oh, dreaming of becoming his student one day.
But before Mun-oh left the orphanage, Kang accidentally heard him say that Kang’s sad life story was nothing specialโjust another “sob story.” Those careless words made Kang feel that the person he respected had looked down on his pain and didn’t truly care about him. Over the next twelve years, Kang planned his revenge.
“On that day, Kang vowed to take revenge against Mun-oh for insulting him and his parents’ tragedy so frivolously.” – Episode 6 flashback
The Aftermath: Mun-oh Loses Everything
After the truth comes out, Mun-oh’s life falls apart completely. His wife, Hyeon-suk, leaves him after years of emotional neglectโMun-oh never truly loved her, as his heart always belonged to Eun-joo. Kang then anonymously posts accusations against Mun-oh on the university’s student forum, revealing that Mun-oh manipulated him into writing a story to settle his score with Su-hun and even attempted to take credit for Kang’s novel. Mun-oh loses his teaching job and his reputation.

The Final Scene: Kang Returns
The series ends with Mun-oh working as a librarian. Kang arrives and asks if Mun-oh would help publish one of his stories. When Mun-oh asks, “What’s the story?” Kang gives a cryptic smile.
“I now have a story I really want to write. I’d like to resume our literature lessons.” – Lee Kang to Mun-oh in the final scene
This ambiguous ending leaves viewers wondering whether Kang is genuinely seeking help or planning another round of psychological torture. One thing is certain: Kang’s twisted mind game has completely destroyed Mun-oh’s life, and the professor remains unable to resist the allure of Kang’s storytelling.
