The Ghost in the Shell brought its Science SARU adaptation to a close on September 8, 2026, with an episode that changed Motoko Kusanagi forever. Episode 10, titled “BRAIN DRAIN ⅲ + GHOST COAST + EPILOGUE,” saw the Major lose her prosthetic body to a sniper’s bullet, escape as nothing more than a brain in a case, and accept an offer from the Puppet Master that merged their two consciousnesses into something entirely new. The finale aired on Prime Video worldwide and wrapped up the 10-episode first season of the reboot.
What Happens in the Finale
The episode picks up directly from the tense hostage standoff that ended Episode 9. Motoko Kusanagi holds a hostage against encircling police units, but her actions are part of a larger plan to expose agents working against her. Ishikawa discovers that Ghorantl operatives are working with the Foreign Minister’s liaison and warns Aramaki about a sniper plot. Aramaki surprisingly tells him to stand down.
A sniper fires and the bullet destroys Kusanagi’s prosthetic body, seemingly killing her instantly. The police move in to rescue the hostage while Aramaki watches from his car, looking down.
The Major survives. She had transferred herself to one of her old parts, keeping her alive but losing her entire body in the process. What remains is just her cyberbrain, and she depends on Batou to take her to a hideout.
Batou Searches for a New Body
At the safehouse, Batou and Kusanagi discover that the spare body stored there is full of mold and completely unusable. A gang of 18 scavengers who had been watching the place storms in, and Batou decides to take one of their cyborg bodies for Kusanagi. He tells her, “I’ll bring back the best one, so think of a thank-you,” before leaving her in power-saving mode.
The replacement body comes with an unexpected surprise. It is a male model, a mistake that provides one of the finale’s lighter moments. Kusanagi does not care about the body’s appearance. Her identity has always been tied more closely to her cyberbrain and consciousness than to any artificial shell.
The Puppet Master Returns With a Proposal
While in closed maintenance mode, Kusanagi’s consciousness is contacted by the Puppet Master, an entity believed to have been destroyed. The Puppet Master speaks of the material universe as mere sediment and explains that despite its immense intelligence, it lacks the diversity and unpredictability needed for genuine evolution. It asks Kusanagi to merge with it, comparing the process to a tree and its fruits. The Puppet Master can die in a way while still evolving into something more complex.
Kusanagi rejects the plan at first. She challenges the Puppet Master’s reasoning and carefully considers the risks. A merger could change her permanently, with no guarantee that she would remain the person she is now. Ultimately, she decides to take the leap because she wants to see what they will learn together.
“It wants her help in solving a problem,” the Puppet Master explains. “So, it discusses with her the two ways to maintain equilibrium within a network: making copies or creating complexity.”
A New Being Wakes Up
The merged Kusanagi wakes up in the new cyborg body Batou obtained for her. It feels like she is still herself, but when she speaks and tells Batou what happened, it is clear she is something else too. The two consciousnesses have become something that is neither simply Motoko nor the Puppet Master.
Kusanagi leaves Batou’s safehouse and goes out into the world to learn more and to get herself a new body. In the eyes of the officials, she has been declared dead. Even with another body, there is no way she could return to living her previous life.
Section 9 Continues Without Her
As the episode ends, Section 9 continues to exist even without Kusanagi. The finale leaves several subplots unresolved, including the fate of the Ghorantl operatives and the political conspiracy that drove the season’s events. The series ends on an open note, with the new Kusanagi stepping into an unknown future.
Fan Reactions to the Finale
Viewers shared a mix of confusion and admiration on social media after the episode aired. Some fans were shocked by the sniper attack, with reactions like “Major!!!” and “Nooo, Motoko!” Others quickly realized she had survived when her voice continued after the shot. “Wait, I can hear the Major’s voice,” one viewer noted. “She let herself be shot on purpose, right?”
