Thomas Shepherd is not just a fast kid. The VisionQuest character, played by Ruaridh Mollica, is the reincarnation of Tommy Maximoff, the son of Wanda Maximoff and Vision. His super-speed does not come from a lab accident or a cosmic event. It comes from his family line, specifically his uncle Pietro Maximoff, also known as Quicksilver. The show has also shown that his powers go further than running fast, including the ability to vibrate his molecules through solid objects.
Who Thomas Shepherd Really Is
Thomas Shepherd first appeared in VisionQuest as a young grifter fresh out of the British foster care system. His past is more complicated than it looks. Tommy Maximoff was created by Wanda’s chaos magic inside the Westview Hex during WandaVision. When the Hex came down, Tommy’s soul did not disappear. It stayed in a disembodied state until Billy Maximoff, his twin brother, guided it into a drowning boy’s body during Agatha All Along. That boy was Thomas Shepherd.
Thomas now carries memories from two lives. In VisionQuest, he describes feeling like someone else moved into his head. The show uses this soul transfer to explain why a young man from London has the powers of a Maximoff.
Why He Is So Fast
Super-speed runs in the Maximoff family. Pietro Maximoff, Wanda’s twin brother, was a speedster. Tommy inherited a similar ability through his mother’s bloodline. The show frames his speed as a genetic and magical inheritance, not a scientific experiment. His soul was shaped by chaos magic and carries the bloodline of Quicksilver himself.
“This is a mystery that I am not comfortable answering.” — Ruaridh Mollica, when asked before the premiere whether his character would have super-speed
That mystery did not last long. The first clear display of his speed came on a prison transport bus. A guard used a stun baton on him, and the electrical charge bounced straight back into the guard. Thomas did not plan it. His body reacted on its own.
More Than Just Running
Thomas does not only move fast. He can vibrate the molecules in matter at an accelerated rate. This lets him phase through glass and metal, break apart solid hinges, and redirect energy that touches him. In VisionQuest, he used this ability to break open a lock at St. Mabyn’s sanitarium when his hands started moving faster than he could control.
In the comics, Tommy Shepherd can run at speeds up to 761 miles per hour. He also has improved agility, stamina, and mental processing while moving at super-speed. By vibrating objects at high speed, he can make them explode. The MCU version is still learning what his body can do, and the show has shown his powers triggering when he is scared or in a hurry rather than on command.
How the Comics Told This Story
Tommy Shepherd first appeared in Young Avengers #10 in March 2006, created by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung. In the comics, he was born in New Jersey to Frank and Mary Shepherd, who had no idea about his heroic family tree. His powers showed up when he was young. He accidentally destroyed his high school and was sent to a youth correctional facility.
The Young Avengers found him through the Avengers Fail-Safe Program and broke him out. He met his twin brother Billy Kaplan for the first time and later took the name Speed. The MCU keeps the core of that story: a young man with out-of-control speed, a hidden family, and a twin brother who helps him find his way.
