What Happens in Ghost in the Shell Episode 2

The story picks up after the events of the premiere. Motoko Kusanagi and her team have been recruited by Daisuke Aramaki and are now officially operating as the Ghost in the Shell squad under Public Security Section 9.

The episode’s central conflict begins when a virus infiltrates the cyberbrain of the Foreign Minister’s interpreter. Aramaki senses that Colonel Mares, who is currently in exile, is attempting to disrupt a secret meeting. He orders Kusanagi and her unit to track down the person responsible using reverse tracking methods.

This marks the first major operation for the newly formed Section 9 team. The episode will show how the unit works together under pressure while dealing with a threat that involves international political tensions and cyber warfare.

The Creative Team Behind the New Series

The new Ghost in the Shell anime brings together a talented group of creators. Moko-chan, who has worked on projects like Dandadan, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, and The Heike Story, is directing the series. This marks Moko-chan’s first time serving as a director.

Toh Enjo, an Akutagawa Prize-winning author, is handling series composition and scriptwriting. Science Saru is the animation studio producing the series. Shuhei Handa is responsible for character design and chief animation direction.

The music for the series comes from Taisei Iwasaki, Ryo Konishi, and Yuki Kanesaka. The opening theme song is “GO GHOST” by King Gnu, while the ending theme is “Blue” by Millennium Parade featuring Saya Gray and Daniel Caesar.

Voice Cast for the New Anime

Maaya Sakamoto voices the lead character Motoko Kusanagi. Kazuhiro Yamaji plays Daisuke Aramaki. The series features other talented voice actors who bring the iconic characters to life in this new adaptation.

Episode Visual and Artwork

The production team has released an episode visual for the second episode. The artwork was created by Kano Kameda of maxilla. This visual is part of a special project where each episode receives an alternative poster design that captures the concepts and themes of that particular episode.

The episode visual for “SUPER SPARTAN ii + JUNK JUNGLE i” presents the episode’s themes through graphic design that goes beyond traditional animation artwork.

About the New Ghost in the Shell Anime

This new television anime is based on Masamune Shirow’s original manga, which began serialization in 1989 in Young Magazine‘s special edition “Young Magazine Pirate Edition”. The story is set in the year 2029, in a near-future Japan where cybernetics and advanced technology are part of everyday life.

Motoko Kusanagi is a full-body prosthesis cyborg who leads an elite unit. Together with Daisuke Aramaki of the Ministry of Home Affairs, they establish Public Security Section 9, an offensive organization known as the “Ghost in the Shell”. The team confronts cybercrimes that involve international conspiracies. An unidentified hacker known as the “Puppet Master” emerges during their investigations, adding another layer of mystery to the series.

The series is reported to have 10 episodes. It is produced by Science Saru, Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, and Production I.G. The first two episodes had their world premiere screening at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France and later at Anime Expo 2026 in Los Angeles.

The new adaptation is notable for staying closer to the original manga compared to previous versions like the 1995 film or the Stand Alone Complex series. Science Saru’s approach focuses on faithful character designs, hardware details, and overall tone that match Shirow’s original work.

Exhibition and Events

A “Ghost in the Shell Exhibition” will run from July 17 at the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art. A retrospective of Masamune Shirow’s work is planned from August in Nagoya.
