Prime Video has released the first official images from Mike Flanagan’s upcoming Carrie television series. The eight-episode adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel gives horror fans their first real look at what the showrunner has been building.
The images dropped on Monday morning, showing Summer H. Howell as the troubled teen with telekinetic powers. One striking photo shows Carrie walking down a street while mailboxes flip open on their own as she passes by. Another image captures Carrie staring at a mannequin with pins stuck into it. The photos also give us our first look at Siena Agudong as Sue Snell and Joel Oulette as Tommy Ross.
Matthew Lillard appears as Principal Grayle, while Samantha Sloyan plays Carrie’s mother, Margaret White. Amber Midthunder takes on the role of Miss Desjardin, Carrie’s gym teacher.
Flanagan’s version moves the story into the modern age. The series will not be a period piece. Carrie White will face the pressures of social media and viral bullying on top of everything else.

Summer H. Howell landed the title role after auditioning against more than 1,000 other young actresses. The Canadian actress brings a fresh take to the character who has been isolated from the world for most of her life.
The full main cast includes:

- Siena Agudong as Sue Snell (a bully who later tries to help Carrie)

- Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin (Carrie’s teacher)
- Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle
Recurring guest stars include Kate Siegel, Michael Trucco, Katee Sackhoff, Rahul Kohli, and Heather Graham.
Flanagan serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. He will direct four episodes himself. Stephen King also serves as an executive producer on the project.
What Makes This Carrie Adaptation Different
Flanagan has made it clear he did not want to simply remake Brian De Palma’s 1976 movie. He told Entertainment Weekly that “The movie exists, and it’s a masterpiece”. Instead, he chose to expand the story in ways that only a television series could allow.
The biggest change involves the mythology of telekinesis. According to Flanagan, the series will introduce multiple women from different time periods who possess telekinetic abilities. This expands on something King hinted at in the original novel.
“Stephen King also talks about the ‘TK gene’ and the science behind Carrie’s abilities. Something that the De Palma adaptation ignored was Carrie’s place in the larger universe, that she’s part of a sorority of very gifted women and just doesn’t know it.”
Starting with episode two, each installment will open with a story about a different woman from somewhere else in the world and time coming to terms with her own abilities.
Flanagan also pointed out that the themes King wrote about in 1974 have become even more relevant today.
“The themes that Steve was talking about half a century ago of kindness versus cruelty, of empathy and bullying, and violence at school have become even more relevant today than he could have contemplated because of our relationship to technology.”
Carrie White Gets a New Personality
Howell described her version of Carrie as someone who is much more open to the world than previous versions. She is curious, wants friends, and genuinely wants to experience life before everything falls apart.
Samantha Sloyan also teased a more layered take on Margaret White.
“Our Margaret White is a woman who fiercely loves her daughter and wants to protect her from this world. She believes isolating Carrie is the only way she knows how to keep her safe.”
This version of Carrie enters high school as an excited and optimistic teenager who does not expect anything bad to happen. She has spent her life hidden away with her protective mother, Margaret.
Plot Details and Premise
The official synopsis for the series reads:
“Misfit high-schooler Carrie White has spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret. After her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social-media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.”
The series is described as a “deeply human story about kindness versus cruelty, and whether we’re witnessing the making of a hero, a monster, or something far more complicated”.
