A single handshake at a Boston bar has turned into the most talked-about moment of Love Is Blind Season 11. During the ninth episode, released on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Rob Feeley introduced his fiancรฉe Michaella Giorgio to his close friends at Sweeney’s in Boston. The night was already heading toward disaster because of crude comments and a fight over alcohol. Then fans caught something else: after Michaella appeared to wipe her hand following a handshake with one of Rob’s friends, that friend said, “You, like, washed your hand like I am from Harlem.” The remark has been widely called racist online, and it has added a new layer to the fallout around Rob and Michaella’s broken engagement.

What Happened at Sweeney’s Bar

The meeting took place in Episode 9 of the Boston-set season, which Netflix released as part of a three-episode drop on October 28, 2026. Rob, a 40-year-old AI infrastructure salesman, had spent earlier episodes describing his friends as rowdy and “a lot to deal with.” Michaella, a 35-year-old retail consultant, walked into the dinner expecting to hold her own.

She did not get a fair chance to settle in. Rob’s friend Jay opened the conversation with sexual comments almost immediately, according to multiple recaps. Jay told Michaella she looked like “a hot Italian mother that makes good meatballs, good pasta, and you know how to, like, play around in the bedroom.” He then asked whether she had ever had an OnlyFans account. Michaella said no.

Another friend questioned whether her career in women’s fashion meant she was on the show “for the wrong reasons.” Michaella told him, “I can’t fake it.”

The night went further off the rails when the bar stopped serving alcohol to one of Rob’s friends, identified in multiple reports as Joe. Rob became furious with the production crew and the bar staff. He demanded that the microphones be removed and told the crew he was “done with this sโ€”t anyway.” He also ordered his brother Ryan to get another round and told him to move the cameras.

Michaella later said she expected Rob to protect her during the dinner. Instead, she said, he turned on her.

The Harlem Comment That Set Fans Off

The handshake moment has become the focal point of fan anger. According to accounts circulating on X and Reddit, Michaella wiped her hand after shaking hands with one of Rob’s friends. That friend responded with the line about Harlem.

An X user who caught the exchange called it “one of the most profoundly racist moments in #loveisblind history.” A Reddit user wrote, “What was up with the racist comment: ‘you avoided touching my hands like I was just in Harlem’ next to the Black guy friend! Boy, bye.”

The presence of a Black friend at the table made the remark worse for many viewers. One X user wrote that the Black friend “just sat there and took it like a chump” and laughed after the comment. Another user from Harlem shared their own experience at Boston College and said the remark was “completely RACIST.”

Fan discussion also turned toward Boston itself. One X user wrote that “these northern white ppl in these ultra liberal states that refuse to live around black ppl are unbelievably more racist that ppl in the south.” Another simply wrote, “Boston is full of racists.”

The friend who made the Harlem comment has not been publicly named in the reporting reviewed for this article. The remark has not been addressed by Rob or by Netflix in the interviews released so far.

Rob Did Not Shut Down the Comments

Michaella has said clearly that she wanted Rob to step in. In an interview with Vulture, she said she expected the dinner to be “fun and a lot of testosterone and male energy” and believed she could handle it. What she did not expect was “sexual commentary about myself” or her career being questioned.

She also remembered the promise Rob made during his proposal. “I was also thinking back to my proposal where Rob promised to protect me,” Michaella told Vulture. “I was completely shocked by the entire conversation when he didn’t.”

Rob’s explanation for staying quiet came in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “She naturally fit in. Everyone loved her,” he said. “I mean, my friend group protects people that I love, so it’s one of those deals, like ‘Welcome to the family.’”

Michaella pushed back on that version of events. “It was disrespectful on his part to not shut down some of the conversations,” she told Tudum. She also said the night left her feeling scared. “I also didn’t want Rob to look bad. But he made himself look bad,” she told Vulture. “And I’m just there like, ‘What are we doing here? Why are you doing this?’”

Her discomfort did not end with his friends. Michaella said Rob later told her that no one stood to gain more from the show than she did because she works in women’s fashion, and that her parents were “crazy” for supporting the experiment. She called those comments “the most insulting thing you could say.”

The Breakup Came Days Before the Wedding

The fallout from the dinner carried into a cast mixer at Lansdowne Pub the following night. Rob, who had been drinking again, confronted a producer over the decision to cut off his friend Joe. He grew agitated when Michaella spoke with her former pod connection, beekeeper Matt Waldrip. He told the group that Netflix would “manipulate this into something crazy” and later told Michaella, “I don’t give a fโ€”k about this sโ€”t. You met me three weeks ago.”

Michaella retreated to the bathroom in tears. She told Erika Ellis that she could not marry Rob “under any circumstances.” She later told him, “I’m gonna love you forever, but, obviously, not gonna work out.”

Rob packed his belongings from their shared apartment and returned to Rhode Island that night. In the Tudum interview, he acknowledged that he should have handled the situation better. “I probably should have handled it in a more mature way and not crashed out,” he said. He also said, “Never in my life would I be aggressive towards a girl.”

Michaella has described the collapse as a betrayal. “Him behaving that way just felt like such a betrayal to me,” she told Tudum. She also said she wishes the two of them had left the show together before the dinner. “It all just got to a really dark place,” she told Vulture. “I think it would’ve been better for his mental state.”

Fans Are Overwhelmingly on Michaella’s Side

Social media reaction has been heavily critical of Rob and his friend group. A Threads user wrote, “The fact that Rob was more upset at the bar for cutting off his friend and not the terrible comments his friend made to his fiance is such a red flag.” Another user asked, “Was I the only one getting annoyed with Rob and his Friends?” A third wrote, “Rob and his friend are the absolute worstโ€ฆ OMG. I was so embarrassed just watching it.”

Today.com reported one fan tweet that read, “Has anyone gone faster from fan favorite to biggest heel than Rob on Love Is Blind Season 11? Wow.” Another fan wrote, “Watching #LoveisBlind and I’m sorry but I feel bad/scared for Michaella because Rob’s behavior is SCARY.”

Michaella’s co-stars have also shown support. Sarah Williams cried during the mixer when she saw how Michaella was being treated. When Rob yelled at Sarah, she responded, “You can’t be mad at me for loving her.” Michaella re-shared that clip on her Instagram Story with the caption, “The blessing is and always will be the girls.”
