The Yellowstone universe just got a new face. Country music star Riley Green officially stepped into the acting world with his debut on the hit spin-off series Marshals. The April 19 episode, titled “Blowback,” introduced Green as Garrett, a former Navy SEAL with a painful past who shows up looking for help from his old teammate, Kayce Dutton.

Fans of the franchise have been waiting to see how the singer would handle the transition from the stage to the screen. Green, known for hits like “Different ‘Round Here” and “Don’t Mind If I Do,” does not play himself. Instead, he takes on the role of a damaged soldier trying to put his life back together.

Luke Grimes Helped His Friend Land the Role

The story behind the casting is a true friendship move. Luke Grimes, who plays Kayce, is also a country musician. The two were writing songs together in Nashville when Green mentioned he wanted to try acting.

Grimes saw the perfect opportunity. Marshals was just coming together, and the story covered Kayce’s background as a Navy SEAL. Grimes thought Green would fit right in as an old teammate.

“Riley and I were doing a write together, and he was talking about wanting to act, and this was right when Marshals was sort of coming together,” Grimes told SiriusXM The Highway. “I thought, ‘Man, that’d be kind of cool if he was like in my show.’”

There was a funny twist, though. CBS did not know who Green was. Even though the part was written for him, the network still wanted him to audition. Grimes found this amusing but went along with it. Green flew to Utah, and the two read together.

“I knew I wasn’t doing myself any favors. Who wants to stand next to him on screen? He’s 6’4″ and pretty darn handsome,” Grimes joked. “But I was like, ‘You know what, man? I think he’d actually be really good at it.’”

The audition went well. Grimes said Green “crushed it” even though it was his first time on a set.

Who Is Garrett in Marshals?

Garrett arrives at Kayce’s ranch in a very humble way. He gets off a bus carrying only a bag and a guitar case. Tate Dutton, Kayce’s son, first spots the stranger and tells his father. Kayce quickly recognizes his old military brother.

The backstory is heavy. Garrett served with Kayce and another teammate named Pete “Cal” Calvin (played by Logan Marshall-Green) in Afghanistan. A fourth member of their team, known only as “Roner,” died during a mission that went wrong.

Since leaving the military, Garrett has had a rough path. He tells Kayce he has been in and out of jail, psych wards, and rehab. At one point, he even slept on the streets. He turned to music as his only way to deal with the pain.

“He’s a really kind of damaged guy,” Green said about his character.

There is also tension between Garrett and Cal. Viewers saw some hostility in Episode 8, and it looks like a bigger clash might be coming between the two former friends.

Riley Green Gets to Sing Around a Campfire

Even though he is acting, Green still gets to do what he does best. In an upcoming episode, viewers will see Garrett perform his song “My Way” during a campfire scene with Kayce.

The show released a preview of the moment. Green says in the clip, “Music’s my only escape. It helps me forget about the past.” Then he starts singing.

Green shared a preview of the ballad on Instagram on April 13. The full song released digitally on April 17, just two days before his episode aired.

The singer has admitted that watching Tim McGraw in 1883 inspired him to try acting.

“I watched everything that was out, just like everybody else did. All [Sheridan’s] movies and TV shows have something special sprinkled on them. Seeing how good Tim McGraw was in 1883, that is probably what got me interested in acting,” Green said.

What to Expect from Garrett

Green is set to appear in four episodes of Marshals. His character is clearly struggling with PTSD and the loss of his teammate. The music seems to be his only comfort.

There is a chance fans could see more of Garrett after these four episodes. Green told USA Today that “there’s the possibility that [Garrett] could be back.”

The Yellowstone franchise has a long history of casting country musicians. Ryan Bingham played Walker on the original show. Tim McGraw and Faith Hill starred in 1883. Now, Riley Green joins that list.

For now, viewers can watch the drama unfold between Garrett, Kayce, and Cal. With Andrea Cruz now kidnapped by a Dutton family enemy, the stakes are getting higher. Garrett’s skills as a former SEAL might come in handy very soon.
