Netflix’s romantic drama Musafir Cafe has become one of the most talked-about Indian series of 2026. Starring Vikrant Massey, Vedika Pinto, and Mahima Makwana, the show tells the story of Chander, Sudha, and Preeti—three ordinary people caught in an extraordinary emotional tangle. While OTT platforms are filled with crime thrillers and big-budget spectacles, this eight-episode series took a completely different route. It focused on simple human relationships, everyday conversations, and the uncomfortable truth that love alone does not always guarantee a happy ending.
Producer Vijay Subramaniam, who is also the Founder and Group CEO of Collective Artists Network, recently opened up about why the show connected so deeply with audiences. In an interview with Hindustan Times, he shared that the success of Musafir Cafe proves something important—storytellers do not need to go out of their way to keep viewers hooked.
Why the Show’s Simplicity Won Over Viewers
According to Vijay Subramaniam, the reason Musafir Cafe worked is because every single person has lived some part of that story. He explained that the show did not try to turn its characters or situations into something extraordinary. Instead, it found emotion in relationships that viewers could recognise from their own lives.
“If you see Musafir Cafe, where people say it’s a love story, the reason why it’s worked is, I think, every single person has lived some part of that, some part of one of the three characters. It’s as real a story as it can get.”
Subramaniam said the show was not a big, fancy production with large sets. It was simply about human relationships and the drama that comes with them. Whether it was the relationship between the mothers, the guest house owners, or the way they behaved with the protagonist, every relationship was written simply but powerfully.
“I just feel at every point, every relationship was very simply written, very riveting and yet very relatable. So I think it was an instant yes. I didn’t even think twice before telling them to go for it.”
The show’s appeal also lies in its refusal to take sides. Unlike many relationship dramas, Musafir Cafe does not declare one person right and the other wrong. Instead, it asks a more interesting question: what happens when two fundamentally decent people simply want different things? For a generation dealing with burnout, career changes, and shifting ideas about commitment, the show feels extremely recognisable.
The Multi-Season Vision from the Start
One of the biggest talking points around Musafir Cafe has been its open ending. The finale left viewers with many unanswered questions, and the debate over whether Chander should choose Sudha or Preeti has been raging across social media.
But Vijay Subramaniam revealed that the show was always planned as a multi-season story. The team did not decide to continue the story only after seeing the show’s response. From the writing stage itself, Musafir Cafe was being developed with more than one season in mind.
“We always thought that it will be a multiple seasons. In fact, as the writing was progressing, we were blessed that the team at Netflix also was equally excited as us. So even they kind of always envisaged this as a multi-season format.”
He added that the writer room had a very clear intent from the beginning. Everyone involved in the show knew it would be a multi-season project. This early commitment means viewers will not have to worry about the story remaining unfinished.
The Debate That Has Everyone Talking
Since its release on July 24, 2026, Musafir Cafe has sparked intense discussions online. The central question that has viewers divided is simple but painful: who should Chander really choose?
The show is adapted from Divya Prakash Dubey’s best-selling novel of the same name. It explores the tragedy of meeting the right person at the wrong time. The series understands that the deepest heartbreak comes with the unbearable knowledge that under slightly different circumstances, everything might have worked out.
Viewers have flooded social media with their opinions. One user wrote, “Why did anyone think of making a web series with this plot. Extremely boring.” Another commented, “musafir cafe was pure rage bait”. But others found the show deeply relatable. One person shared, “Why is this so relatable? What the Cast Had to Say
The cast of Musafir Cafe has also been overwhelmed by the response. Vedika Pinto, who plays Sudha, said in an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama that she is still trying to understand the extent of the connection audiences have formed with the series.
“This is pure love. This is what I am getting. I don’t even have the words to describe it. There is just so much love pouring in.”
Pinto also shared an amusing observation. She said that hundreds of men have messaged her saying, “You look like my ex-girlfriend.” Women have told her that their friends say she looks like them. She laughed and said she realised she probably has a “very generic face”. But she sees this as a positive because it makes her more relatable to the audience.
“It’s a nice feeling. You know that I am quite relatable. So I think what Sudha has given me and what Musafir Cafe has given me is an introduction to the audience.”
Mahima Makwana, who plays Preeti, has also received tremendous love for her performance. The show gives her character dignity instead of reducing her to the convenient “other woman”. She understands that Chander’s past is not something to compete with but something she must live alongside.
Vikrant Massey, who plays Chander, also serves as a co-producer on the show through his banner Homemade Stories. He has called Vijay Subramaniam his mentor and said he was pushed to take on this project. The series marks Massey’s debut as a producer.

What makes Musafir Cafe stand out is its honest portrayal of love. The show does not romanticise grand gestures or happily-ever-afters. Instead, it poses one important question: is love enough?
Chander is a software engineer who dreams of escaping corporate life to open a café in the hills. Ruchir Arun, who directed the series, brings his signature style of capturing everyday intimacy. His work on Little Things echoes throughout the series. Cafés, train stations, rented apartments, and mountain roads become emotional spaces where conversations linger longer than expected.
The show has drawn praise for its music, its breathtaking hillscapes, and Massey’s performance. But the open finale has sent viewers back to the book and into online debates over Chander’s fate.
