The long-running mystery behind the photograph on Anna Merrick’s USB drive finally got answered in Reacher Season 4 Episode 7. The penultimate episode, titled “Vote for Sampson,” dropped on Prime Video on September 9, 2026. After weeks of questions, the show finally revealed what was actually hidden in that picture – and it changes everything about the conspiracy.
The episode picked up right where the previous cliffhanger left off. Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) and Detective Tamara Green (Sydelle Noel) were trapped in a van, about to be executed by mercenaries. But they got saved by an unexpected ally, and what followed was a massive information dump that explained the entire season’s plot.
The Photograph Contained a Chemical Weapon Formula
Once Reacher and Tamara were free, Reacher went straight after Leo Ahlquist (Shawn Doyle). He forced Ahlquist to talk by breaking his fingers. The truth came out: the photograph was not just a simple picture. It contained the formula for a chemical weapon of mass destruction hidden on a whiteboard in the background.
The writing on the whiteboard was originally too blurry to read. But recent advances in AI technology allowed the lens to be digitally refocused, revealing the chemical formula. Amisha (Anggun), who had been in General Putra’s special forces unit, managed to refocus the image and extract the formula.
Operation Mongoose Was a Secret CIA Program
Ahlquist explained the backstory behind the photograph. After the Sarin gas attacks on the Tokyo subway, the U.S. government decided that chemical weapons would become a major threat. The CIA contracted DARPA to create their own chemical weapons. The goal was to reverse-engineer them and find antidotes.
This secret program was called Operation Mongoose. It could not be run on American soil because chemical weapons development was banned by international treaties. So Washington made a deal with General Putra. In exchange for Delta Force training his troops, Putra allowed the CIA to build a secret chemical weapons lab in the Indonesian rainforest.
The operation was kept hidden from Congressman John Sampson (Marc Blucas). Sampson would have exposed the program if he had known. But Nolan Cahill, Sampson’s former commander, knew about it the whole time.
Why Anna Merrick Stole the Photograph
Anna Merrick stole the photograph from a federal directory and deleted the original. Her theft triggered a hidden security alarm. Department of Defense agents were sent after her. Cahill followed her into the subway himself because he did not want others to see what was on the drive.
After Anna died, Cahill made two calls – one to Ahlquist and another to Foster, the CIA officer who ran Operation Mongoose. Ahlquist had built a billion-dollar pesticide business using what he learned from the project. He had every reason to keep the operation buried.
Lila and Amisha Planned to Sell the Weapon
Lila Hoth (Agnez Mo) and Amisha were not just working for money. Amisha worshipped General Putra and wanted revenge. She had taken the original photograph herself. The two women had already created a working version of the chemical weapon. They planned to sell it on the dark web.
The weapon was derived from a plant native to Indonesia. Lila had access to the seeds needed to create it. They also planned to run a proof-of-concept demonstration to prove the weapon’s value to potential buyers.
Jacob Merrick Got a Second Chance
Jacob Merrick (Christopher Marquette) was in police custody at the start of the episode. But Detective Shaun Docherty (Kevin Corrigan) had a change of heart. He let Jacob go after understanding the full scope of the conspiracy. Jacob immediately contacted Reacher and Tamara to warn them.
Jacob revealed that Lila and Amisha already had a working version of the weapon. They were planning to auction it off, and time was running out.
Sampson’s Fundraiser Became the Target
Reacher and his team initially thought the test would happen somewhere in Philadelphia. But that turned out to be a false lead. The real target was Congressman Sampson’s own campaign fundraiser.
Sampson was the perfect target for Amisha’s revenge. He had personally pulled the trigger on General Putra when a U.S. team was sent to take him out. Amisha had witnessed Putra’s killing.
The Episode Ended with a Bomb Explosion
As Reacher and his team raced to the fundraiser, Sampson spotted the suicide bomber before anyone else could. He tackled the bomber and drove him into a nearby river just as the bomb detonated. The episode ended with the explosion and Sampson’s fate left uncertain.
Reacher Season 4 Episode 8, titled “Cut,” will premiere on Prime Video on September 16, 2026. The finale will show Reacher, Tamara, and Jacob going on the attack as the full extent of the plot is revealed. Reacher will confront those responsible for Anna’s death.
