Red River is based on Chie Shinohara’s historical fantasy manga, which ran in Shogakukan’s Shojo Comic magazine from 1995 to 2002. The manga was collected into 28 tankobon volumes and has surpassed 20 million copies in circulation, including digital editions.
The manga won the 46th Shogakukan Manga Award in the girls’ category and was later adapted into a stage musical by the famous all-female Takarazuka Revue troupe in 2018.
Fans waited more than 30 years for a television anime adaptation of Red River. The anime is produced by Tatsunoko Production, with Kosuke Kobayashi directing and Yoriko Tomita handling series scripts. Historical researchers from the Japanese Institute of Anatolian Archaeology were brought on board to ensure the ancient Hittite setting feels authentic.
The voice cast includes Mirai Tachibana as Yuri, Wataru Kato as Kail, Hiroki Nanami as the narrator and Satoshi Himuro, and Aya Uchida as Queen Nakia. For the second cour, Nana Mizuki joins as Ursula, a false Ishtar figure, and performs the new opening theme “Akatsuki no Hoshi”.
