The HBO comedy series Rooster delivered another tense episode on April 19, 2026. Episode 7, titled “All the Dog’s Names,” dealt with the fallout from last week’s shocking discovery. Greg Russo (Steve Carell) is now facing the awkward reality that his student Tommy is the son of his lover, Cristle. The episode focuses on relationships falling apart and new ones starting to form.
Russo and Cristle End Things for Tommy’s Sake
The episode opens with Greg Russo trying to fix things with Tommy. After class, Russo apologizes for what happened at Cristle’s house. Both agree to never talk about that night again. Russo still wants to help Tommy improve his grades, but Tommy cannot even look at his professor. The young man is deeply hurt and embarrassed.
Later that night, Cristle tells Russo why this situation is so painful for her son. Tommy’s father left Cristle for Tommy’s high school math teacher. For Tommy, losing a favorite teacher to a parent’s romantic interest is a repeated trauma. To protect her son from going through that again, Cristle decides to end things with Russo. They share a long hug and say kind words about their time together.
“Cristle thought Greg should have fought for her. She wanted to see him at least try to stop her, but he agreed almost immediately when she suggested breaking up.”
Russo checks on Cristle to make sure she is doing okay. She admits she hoped he would fight to keep her. But he does not. Cristle later takes a leave from her job, leaving Walt frustrated. The breakup is friendly on the surface, but Cristle is clearly disappointed that Russo gave up so easily.
Walt Offers Dylan a Promotion
Dylan (Danielle Deadwyler) is upset about losing the Dean of Faculty position. She talks to Russo about how much she enjoyed being heard and having power to make changes. Russo gives her advice about not feeling down about the loss.
Walt interrupts their conversation by trying to open Russo’s locked door. The scene is funny as Russo pushes Walt’s head back and closes the door to release the chain. Walt asks Russo to fill in as the hockey coach while the regular coach is away. Russo agrees but says no to joining Walt in the hot house.
During a coffee walk, Walt offers Dylan the head of the English department position. It is meant as a kind gesture to make up for her losing the dean job. But Dylan politely refuses. She tells Walt she wants to be Dean because the current one is not doing a good job. She reveals that Russo encouraged her to speak up for herself. Walt does not look pleased that Russo helped her.
Katie and Zoey Fight for Dylan
Katie (Charly Clive), Dylan, Zoey, and Katie’s TA are talking about women in power at the college. Russo walks up to them. They immediately call him out for talking to Dylan on Walt’s behalf. Russo tries to defend Walt, but Dylan is not buying it.
Later, Katie and Zoey sit down with Walt. Katie praises Zoey’s research skills as they present facts about the lack of women in leadership at Ludlow. Katie makes a strong case for why Dylan is the best person for the Dean of Faculty job. Walt listens and seems to understand their points.
Walt then meets with Dean Riggs (Alan Ruck). He brings up the problems Dylan mentioned. Walt lists several past remarks from Riggs that were misogynistic or insensitive toward students and teachers. Walt realizes that Riggs refuses to change with the times, while Walt has made a genuine effort to improve. After a honest conversation with Russo in the hot house, Walt knows what he needs to do.
Walt tells Dylan she will be the new Dean of Faculty. Dylan’s happiness is clear on her face as she tries to stay calm and focus on her teaching.
Archie’s Dilemma with Katie and Sunny
Archie (Phil Dunster) continues to struggle with his feelings for Katie and his responsibility to Sunny, the grad student he got pregnant. Archie promises to bring Katie breakfast every morning until she takes him back. He shows up with croissants and charm, trying to win her heart again.
On the same day, Sunny’s father Fred (Jim O’Heir) visits Ludlow. To Mo’s annoyance, Fred and Archie build a good relationship quickly. Fred encourages Archie to attend Sunny’s OB-GYN checkup. This is the first time Archie has gone with her to a doctor’s appointment, showing how little he has been involved so far.
During the ultrasound scan, something changes for Archie. Seeing the baby on the screen moves him in a real way. For the first time, he seems ready to accept that he is going to be a father.
The next morning, Katie waits for Archie to bring her breakfast as he promised. But Archie does not show up. He only nods at her from a distance. Katie is left heartbroken and disappointed. The man who promised to win her back has already pulled away. Charly Clive’s performance in this moment captures the quiet pain of someone whose hope has cracked.
Walt and Russo’s Friendship Grows
The episode also focuses on the strange friendship forming between Walt and Russo. Walt feels hurt that Russo keeps avoiding him. He lists all the times Russo has turned down his invitations. Then Walt asks Russo about why things on his desk were moved, hinting that he knows about Russo and Cristle’s intimate moment on his desk.
Russo eventually returns to the hot house to talk with Walt. Walt admits he is lonely. He does not have many friends, and he feels he is too much for most people. He is disappointed that he and Russo are not as close as he had hoped.
Russo steps outside to get some air but shares encouraging words with Walt. He tells Walt to make his own choices about Dylan’s role at the college. Walt then breaks the chain between their doors, promising to knock from now on. The episode ends with Russo and Walt riding identical electric bikes down the road together. It is a small but meaningful step in their odd-couple friendship.
