Comedian and actor Russell Brand has given a candid interview about his short-lived marriage to pop star Katy Perry. He openly admitted his faults and explained why their relationship fell apart.
The 50-year-old star appeared on The Megyn Kelly Show on April 22, 2026. He did not hold back while discussing his divorce from the “Roar” singer. Brand stated clearly that he was the one to blame for the marriage ending, saying he felt lost and insecure at the time.

Brand Says His Insecurities Ruined the Relationship
Russell Brand and Katy Perry got married in October 2010. Their wedding was a grand event in India. But just over a year later, in December 2011, Brand filed for divorce. The split was finalized in July 2012.
During the interview, Brand explained that he rushed into the marriage for the wrong reasons. He admitted he was not happy with himself before they got together.
“I pushed to get married early because I felt inadequate and insecure and that I wasn’t enough,” Brand told Megyn Kelly. He confessed that he thought marrying the famous singer would fix his own problems. “If I was married to her, I would somehow be a better person and more important.”
The actor realized that this way of thinking was selfish. He admitted that his demands put a heavy weight on Perry’s shoulders.
“That put her under an unnecessary amount of pressure and strain,” Brand said. He noted that Perry was a “very young woman” at the time, and she was trying to become the biggest pop star in the world. While she was working hard to achieve her dreams, Brand said he was feeling lonely and questioning why the marriage was not making him happy.
He did not hold back when criticizing his own behavior.
“Here’s me taking total responsibility for all the mistakes I made in that marriage,” Brand stated firmly. He admitted he saw Perry as an object to grab onto rather than a partner. “I felt like I was inadequate and not enough on my own, so I saw this big, glorious thing.”
Despite the heavy criticism of himself, Brand spoke highly of Katy Perry‘s character.
“She has an innocence. She’s a very beautiful person,” he said. “She’s also incredibly driven and worked really, really hard. I saw her working really hard.”
Contact with Perry and Her Family
Many fans have wondered if the two exes ever speak. Brand gave a direct answer. He told Kelly that he has not spoken to Katy Perry since he told her he wanted a divorce.
However, he remains close with her parents. Brand shared that he still keeps in touch with Keith and Mary Hudson.
“I stay in touch with her father, Keith, and her mother, Mary, ’cause they’re good Christian folks,” Brand revealed. He added that he feels sympathy for Perry regarding the recent accusations made by actress Ruby Rose. Perry has officially denied those claims.
Jokes About Trudeau and Perry
The conversation also turned to Perry’s personal life today. Reports have linked the singer to former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Brand made jokes about the rumors.
“I put up with a lot with that ex-wife of mine, but you took it too far, KP,” Brand joked on the show.
He compared Trudeau to Perry’s other famous ex, actor Orlando Bloom. “Orlando Bloom, I love that guy. Brilliant,” Brand said. “Justin Trudeau, though, potentially Fidel Castro’s spawn. No, there we draw the line.”
Brand explained that he generally dislikes “good-looking politicians” like Trudeau, Barack Obama, and Tony Blair. He said he finds their charm to be fake and selfish.
Perry Responds Quietly Amid the Noise
Katy Perry has not directly responded to Brand’s claims about their marriage. However, she did post a message on her Instagram shortly after the interview went viral.
Perry shared photos from her Lifetimes Tour which started one year ago. She wrote a reflective message to fans.
“One year ago we kicked off The Lifetimes Tour. So MUCH has changed in one year and yes, I have changed so much in one year…” Perry wrote. She gave advice to her younger self: “Put one foot in front of the other.”
Her post ended on a positive note. “It’s only when I look back that I can see the plan of the Invisible Hand calling me to greater glory. I couldn’t have made it without you. I love you for life, lifetimes,” she told her fans.
