Shaquille O’Neal will not be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The basketball legend recently shared that he tried for years to get a role in an Avengers movie, but the studio said no. The reason? He is simply too famous.
The 54-year-old NBA Hall of Famer opened up about his Hollywood struggles in an exclusive interview with Variety. He was promoting his new professional dunking league, Dunkman, which airs its finals on TNT on August 25, 2026. During the conversation, he revealed that his dream of becoming an Avenger is over.
O’Neal explained that top Hollywood executives have told him his larger-than-life personality makes it hard for audiences to see him as anyone other than Shaq. This has cost him several acting roles, including a spot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Real Reason Marvel Said No to Shaq
According to O’Neal, Marvel Studios was honest with him about why they could not cast him. He said studio executives told him they loved him but had a major concern.
“I wanted to be in the ‘Avengers’ and they were like, ‘Shaq, we love you and we’d love to put you in, but if your face pops up on screen people are going to go, ‘Hey, that’s Shaq!’” O’Neal recalled. “He said it truthfully, and I was like, alright… I guess my face is too bigtime.”
The former basketball star said this is a common problem he faces in Hollywood. He noted that when he appears on screen, viewers immediately think of his basketball career rather than the character he is playing.
“I would love to do more action roles but we were told by top Hollywood executives that I’m too big, and what they mean by that is when I pop up on the screen everyone will go, ‘Oh, that’s Shaq!’ So, if I’m trying to play a doctor or anything, my character won’t be believable,” O’Neal explained.
This means O’Neal will not be in December’s Avengers: Doomsday or any future Avengers films.
A Long History of Wanting to Join the MCU
This was not a sudden idea for O’Neal. He first publicly shared his wish to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2018. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said he would love to be in an Avengers movie.
At that time, he even joked about fighting Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man character. “I would love to be in one of the Avengers movies,” he said. “I would like to kick Robert Downey Jr.’s ass.”
Despite his interest, Marvel never gave him a chance. His efforts to join the franchise went nowhere, and he recently confirmed that the studio officially turned him down.
Shaq’s Previous Superhero Experience
While O’Neal never got to play a Marvel hero, he did star in a DC superhero film earlier in his career. In 1997, he played the lead role in Steel. He portrayed John Henry Irons, a genius engineer who builds a mechanized suit.
The movie did not perform well at the box office, but O’Neal looks back on it as a good opportunity. He later told Entertainment Weekly that he would like to redo the film with modern special effects.
What Shaq Is Working On Now
Even though his Marvel dream is dead, O’Neal is still busy in the entertainment world. He recently made a cameo in Scary Movie earlier this year. He also has an upcoming role in Grown Ups 3.
His main focus right now is Dunkman, the first professional dunking league. Contestants from around the world compete for a $500,000 grand prize. The finals will air on TNT on August 25, 2026.

O’Neal may have given up on Marvel, but he has a new Hollywood goal. He said he wants to make a movie with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
“I want to do a movie with The Rock so I can beat him up,” O’Neal declared.
When asked if he could actually take down The Rock, Shaq gave a confident answer.
“Oh, easy! Barbecue chicken.”
This comment has caught the attention of fans, with many now hoping to see the two larger-than-life stars share the screen.
