Marvel Studios is looking at what could be the biggest box office opening in movie history. Avengers: Doomsday has already generated around $100 million in advance ticket sales, and industry experts now project a $1 billion global opening weekend when the film releases on December 18, 2026.
The numbers are breaking records months before the film even hits theaters. Tickets went on sale nearly four months ahead of release, much earlier than the usual 43-day advance window. The early demand has been extraordinary, with the film reportedly running 65% ahead of the first two days of presales for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which became the year’s highest-grossing movie and crossed $2 billion worldwide.
Presales Break Records Months Before Release
The advance ticket sales for Avengers: Doomsday have set new benchmarks. Reports from The Wrap, World of Reel, and Box Office Theory indicate that the film has already sold 92% of the entire preview ticket haul that The Fantastic Four: First Steps generated across its whole run. This suggests the film could clear $100 million in previews alone.
The first-day advance ticket sales hit $16.5 million, which was double what Deadpool & Wolverine managed on its first day in 2024, despite that film having every format available. Those early sales were limited to premium screens under Disney’s new Infinity Vision banner.
Based on the current momentum, reports suggest that a $1 billion global opening weekend could be within reach. That would rank among the biggest launches in box-office history.
Robert Downey Jr. Returns as Doctor Doom
One of the biggest draws for Avengers: Doomsday is Robert Downey Jr. returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But this time, he is not playing Tony Stark or Iron Man. He takes on the role of Victor Von Doom / Doctor Doom, giving fans a very different version of the actor.
Marvel Studios put Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in the spotlight with a special look at Avengers: Doomsday, unveiled during an action-packed showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. The footage was introduced on stage by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Downey Jr., Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), and Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter).
The new promo gave fans their first real taste of Doctor Doom and hinted at just how dangerous the MCU’s new big villain could be. The footage also teased a major showdown between the villain and Chris Hemsworth’s Thor.
During the event, Downey Jr. was asked to choose between Iron Man and Doctor Doom. For now, he picked the villain.
“I will say Doom, for now. It was really weird being the guy — everyone else is hanging out, they’re the good heroes, and I’m in this mask and this hood.”
Massive Ensemble Cast Brings Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men Together
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday is bringing together characters from different corners of the Marvel universe for a battle that could determine the fate of the multiverse.
The film features a massive ensemble cast, including:
- Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom / Victor von Doom
- Chris Evans as Steve Rogers
- Chris Hemsworth as Thor
- Pedro Pascal
- Paul Rudd as Ant-Man
- Anthony Mackie as Captain America
- Florence Pugh
- Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman
- Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing
- Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes
- Letitia Wright as Black Panther
- Channing Tatum as Gambit
- Simu Liu as Shang-Chi
- Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart as X-Men characters
- And many more
The story takes place 14 months after the events of Thunderbolts. Heroes from Earth-616, Earth-828, and other universes are expected to come together as they attempt to stop a threat capable of destroying the multiverse. According to Marvel, the film follows beloved heroes from three distinct universes as they are set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they have ever encountered.
December Box Office Clash with Dune: Part Three
The December release schedule makes the situation even more interesting. Avengers: Doomsday and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three are both scheduled to arrive on December 18.
Fans have already dubbed the pairing “Dunesday,” setting up what could become one of the largest combined box office weekends ever recorded. The competition between the two films could become particularly intense in premium-format cinemas. Doomsday is being positioned across premium formats, while Dune: Part Three has a major advantage in IMAX with its three-week exclusive window.
Both films also have the benefit of arriving at the start of the Christmas window, giving both productions an extended opportunity to gain from the holiday season.
The holiday period will then see another major release in India with Shah Rukh Khan’s King scheduled for December 24. This could turn the season into a major box office battle involving three highly anticipated films.
What the Numbers Mean for Marvel
The production budget for Doomsday is estimated to be between $400 million and $500 million. This implies that the film would need to earn roughly between $1 billion and $1.25 billion worldwide to break even at the box office, using the commonly cited 2.5x multiplier rule.
Some analysts have offered more conservative estimates, with domestic projections ranging as low as $230 million to $260 million and worldwide openings closer to $600 million. Even those more cautious figures would still represent one of the biggest debuts of the year.
For comparison, the three biggest combined weekends in box office history were tied to the releases of Avengers: Endgame in 2019, which generated $402 million collectively; Avengers: Infinity War in 2018 at $314 million; and Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015 at $313 million. Given the tracking numbers circulating for both December releases, that record appears to be squarely in play.

Despite the mixed reactions, the presale numbers tell a different story. The fanbase appears unified and excited about the return of beloved characters and the introduction of new ones.
