Sunny Deol recently spoke about his old disagreement with Shah Rukh Khan during the making of the 1993 film Darr. Sunny made it clear that he does not consider himself an insecure person but accepted that many actors in Bollywood deal with these feelings. What Happened Between Sunny Deol and Shah Rukh Khan on the Sets of Darr

The disagreement between Sunny and Shah Rukh happened during the shooting of Darr. Sunny played naval commando Sunil in the film, while Shah Rukh portrayed Rahul, an obsessive lover who stalks Juhi Chawla’s character Kiran. The argument started over a scene in the climax. Sunny objected to a sequence where Rahul manages to stab Sunil during a face-to-face confrontation.

Sunny believed the scene did not make sense for his character. He argued that Sunil was an elite naval commando and should not have been easily overpowered by an untrained civilian. He felt the attack would have worked better if Sunil was distracted or stabbed from behind. Sunny thought the scene damaged the credibility of his character just to make the antagonist look stronger.

The argument with director Yash Chopra became very heated. Sunny was so frustrated that he put his hands in his pockets and ripped his jeans without realising his own strength. He later recalled the moment and said he was angry at himself, not at anyone else.

Sunny was also unhappy with how the film showed Shah Rukh’s character. He felt the movie created sympathy for the obsessive stalker character. On Aap Ki Adalat, Sunny had previously said, “At the end of the day, people loved me in the film. They loved Shah Rukh Khan as well. My only issue with the film was that I did not know they would glorify the villain”.

Sunny Deol on Insecurity Among Actors

During his conversation with Shubhankar Mishra, Sunny spoke about how insecurity affects actors in the film industry. He said he is not an insecure person and never feels that way on set. However, he accepted that many actors struggle with these feelings.

“At a younger age, I won’t say that we don’t have a little something with each other. We do have that. And I have never been like that. I am not an insecure person. I am never insecure on set. But because of insecurity, many actors do things which they don’t have to do”.

Sunny explained that actors can only perform within the limits of their characters. He said insecurity can lead actors to behave in ways that create problems on set.

“We cannot be anything beyond that. But somehow, quite a lot of actors feel very insecure. And because of that, the vibes go wrong. Things happen which don’t have to happen. But then, that’s the reality of our film industry”.

He added that when actors feel insecure, the atmosphere on set gets affected. This can lead to unnecessary conflicts and misunderstandings.

Shah Rukh Khan Is a Colleague, Not a Friend: Sunny Deol

When asked about his current relationship with Shah Rukh Khan, Sunny gave a clear answer. He said they were never enemies, even during the years when they did not speak. But he does not consider Shah Rukh a close friend.

“We were not enemies at that time also. By friends, I mean, we are all colleagues in the film industries. We are all colleagues in the film industry rather than friends”.

Sunny explained that relationships in Bollywood are mostly professional. He said his real friends are the ones he made in school. He believes true friendship is something deeper and more personal.

The actor also mentioned that he does not socialise much. He said that is why he did not speak to Shah Rukh for so many years.

“It’s not that I didn’t talk, but I just cut myself off, and I anyway don’t socialise much. So we never met”.

How the Feud Ended After 30 Years

The long-standing tension between Sunny and Shah Rukh finally ended in 2023. Shah Rukh reached out to Sunny after the massive success of Gadar 2. Sunny shared the details of that conversation.

“Shah Rukh Khan had seen the film. Before that, he had called me and wished me well. He was so happy, and he told me ‘I’m so happy, you genuinely deserve it’ and I said thank you”.

Sunny also spoke to Gauri Khan and Aryan Khan after that call. Shah Rukh told Sunny that his family was going to watch Gadar 2 that night. This gesture marked the end of their cold war and brought a positive change to their relationship.

“Shah Rukh ke saath ek hi film ki thi. Toh ek aur kar sakte hain. It would be nice because that was a long time ago”.

This statement shows that Sunny is ready to move forward and does not hold any grudge against his former co-star. The two actors have only worked together in Darr so far. A new project with both of them would excite fans who have followed their journey over the years.

What the Darr Controversy Was Really About

The controversy around Darr was not just about one scene. It was about how the film treated both characters. Sunny was the hero of the film, but Shah Rukh’s performance as the obsessive villain got most of the attention.

Sunny felt that the film’s narrative gave too much sympathy to the villain. He believed this took away from his character’s importance. The disagreement over the climax scene was the breaking point. Sunny wanted the fight to be more realistic for his character. He did not want his naval commando to be easily beaten.

Action director Tinu Verma had earlier shared details about the same incident. He said Shah Rukh refused to attack Sunny from behind during the fight sequence. Shah Rukh wanted to do the scene differently, which added to the tension between the two actors.

Sunny has now made it clear that he does not blame Shah Rukh for what happened. He said his anger was directed at himself and the situation, not at his co-star.
