Sunny Deol’s latest period drama Batwara 1947 had a rocky start at the box office. After a strong jump on its second day, the film saw a major dip in collections on Sunday. The movie, which released on August 14, could not cross the ₹30 crore mark in its opening weekend in India.
According to trade tracker Sacnilk, Batwara 1947 earned around ₹7.25 crore net on its third day (Sunday). This marked a 46.3% drop from Saturday’s collection of ₹13.50 crore. The film’s total India net collection after the opening weekend stands at ₹26.50 crore.
Opening Weekend Numbers Tell a Mixed Story
The film opened with ₹5.75 crore on Friday, August 14. The numbers jumped significantly on Saturday, reaching ₹13.50 crore, thanks to the Independence Day holiday boost. However, the momentum did not last. Sunday’s collection dropped sharply to ₹7.25 crore.
The film’s India gross collection after three days reached ₹31.61 crore. Overseas, Batwara 1947 collected ₹2 crore on Day 3, taking its total overseas gross to ₹5.50 crore. The worldwide gross collection after the opening weekend stands at approximately ₹37.11 crore.
Monday Shows Bigger Trouble for Sunny Deol’s Film
The first Monday brought more bad news for the film. Batwara 1947 earned just ₹2 crore net in India on August 17. This is a steep 72.4% drop from its Sunday collection. The film had around 11% occupancy across 6,771 shows.
After four days, the film’s India net collection stands at ₹28.50 crore, while its India gross has reached ₹33.95 crore. The film also earned about ₹0.75 crore from overseas markets on Day 4, taking its overseas gross to ₹6.25 crore and its worldwide gross to ₹40.20 crore.
High Budget Puts Film Under Pressure
Batwara 1947 was reportedly made on a budget of ₹120 crore. With a net collection of ₹28.50 crore after four days, the film has recovered only a small portion of its investment. To be considered a success in India, the film needs to reach the ₹120 crore net mark. The current numbers suggest a difficult road ahead.
Awarapan 2 Dominates the Box Office Clash
Batwara 1947 faces tough competition from Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2. The difference between the two films has become very clear. Awarapan 2 has already crossed the ₹110 crore mark worldwide. On Monday, Awarapan 2 earned ₹9.25 crore net, which is more than four times what Batwara 1947 collected. After four days, Awarapan 2 has reportedly collected ₹91 crore net in India and is moving closer to the ₹100 crore milestone.
What the Film Is About
Batwara 1947 is directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and brings the filmmaker together with Sunny Deol after nearly 30 years. The duo previously delivered successful films like Ghayal (1990), Damini (1993) and Ghatak (1996).
The movie is based on a 1989 play by Asghar Wajahat titled Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai. The plot follows a married couple, played by Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, who celebrate India’s freedom but have to migrate to Pakistan due to the Partition. The film is produced by Aamir Khan Productions.
The cast includes Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol. The music is composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics by Javed Akhtar.
Critical Reception and Performances
The film has received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Film critic Saibal Chatterjee wrote in his review for NDTV, “On the acting front, the man of action persona stalks Sunny Deol all through the film but to his credit the lead actor makes the most of the film’s quieter moments and emotive scenes to add a kind of weight that is far more powerful than his fists of fury”.
He also praised Preity Zinta, saying she “providing an ideal foil, also does her bit to enhance a few of the crucial turning points”. About Shabana Azmi, he wrote, “She delivers an absolute tour de force. She does in Batwara 1947 what Naseeruddin Shah did in Main Vaapas Aaunga. She lends it the sort of depth and gravitas that instantly elevate the entire enterprise”.
Hema Malini also shared her review of the film, calling it “simply brilliant” and praising its focus on compassion rather than division. She appreciated Sunny Deol, Shabana Azmi, Karan Deol and Preity Zinta for their performances.
However, some critics pointed out issues with the film’s storytelling. One review noted that the film “slips on soap opera-like storytelling” and has an “uneven pitch” that undercuts the drama’s overall appeal.

Box Office Challenges Ahead
The sharp drop on Monday is a worrying sign for the film. The first weekday usually gives a clear picture of how well a movie is holding after its opening weekend. In Batwara 1947’s case, the steep fall suggests that the film is struggling to maintain audience interest once the weekend is over.
Despite having several factors working in its favour, including a strong cast and favourable reviews, the appreciation has not translated into strong theatrical footfalls. With a high budget and strong competition from Awarapan 2, the film faces an uphill battle at the box office.
