AMCโs drama The Audacity dropped its third episode titled โValley of Heartโs Delightโ on April 19, 2026. The episode delivers a major blow to protagonist Duncan Park when a psychological test reveals he is โcompletely typicalโ and not neurodivergent as he believed. This news shatters his entire self-image and pushes him into a deeper spiral of desperate behavior.
The show follows Duncan, a tech entrepreneur trying to secure funding for his data company Hypergnosis. Episode 3 focuses on how far he will go to prove his worth when his core identity gets stripped away.
The Test Results That Break Duncanโs World
After pushing his therapist Dr. Gary to run a neuropsych test, Duncan waits for results that he expects to confirm his belief that he is different from everyone else. He thinks being neurodivergent gives him an edge in the tech world. But the results say otherwise.
Dr. Gary tells Duncan he is โcompletely typicalโ and shows normal levels of empathy. For most people, this would be fine news. For Duncan, it feels like a death sentence. He built his whole personality around being an outsider genius who does not follow normal social rules. Now that label is gone.
Duncan keeps repeating things about himself like they are facts. โI have zero sense of humor and zero empathy,โ he insists. โIโm an apex predator. I eat empathy for breakfast.โ But the test proves he actually does have empathy. His entire self-image falls apart.
A Spider Becomes Duncanโs Strange Symbol
Episode 3 uses a small spider in Duncanโs sink to show his mental state. At first, he tries to flush the spider away to prove he lacks empathy. But the spider keeps coming back. Its refusal to die starts to inspire Duncan.
The spider represents how Duncan sees himself. No matter how many times people reject him or things go wrong, he keeps pushing forward. When a housekeeper accidentally kills the spider by stepping on it, Duncan feels genuine sadness. He calls JoAnne and tells her he lost a friend. This moment shows that despite his claims of having no feelings, he actually cares deeply about small things.
Duncanโs Failed Pitch To Carl Bardolph
JoAnne gives Duncan the name of Carl Bardolph as a potential investor. But she picks Carl on purpose because she knows he will be rude and hostile. She hopes a bad experience will get Duncan off her back. Carl is extremely wealthy and protected. He feels comfortable stabbing a stranger with a fork without any fear of consequences.
When Duncan tracks Carl down at his favorite milkshake shop, things go very wrong. Carl makes it clear he does not want strangers invading his space. He stabs Duncan in the palm with a fork. Duncan runs away hurt but not defeated.
Later, Duncan tries again. This time Carlโs security guards tackle him outside the restaurant and throw him out. But Duncan does not stop. His persistence becomes his only real skill.
The VA Party That Never Happens
At Hypergnosis headquarters, Duncan learns that Ruffage and Jeffery still think a deal with the Department of Veterans Affairs is possible. Anushka never told them the deal was off. Ruffage mentions that the VA deal would give Hypergnosis access to millions of veteransโ private data.
Duncan smells money. He decides to throw a big patriotic rooftop barbecue party for the Secretary of the VA. He decorates with American flags and plans to serve a roasted pig. But wildfires near Napa get worse. The Secretary delays her flight and chooses to attend a different event at Spookleโs headquarters instead.
Duncan takes this rejection very badly. Nothing seems to work for him. The VA does not take his bid seriously. Carl stabbed him. His party failed. But he still refuses to give up.
JoAnneโs Struggle With Her Son Orson
While Duncan chases money, JoAnne deals with problems involving their son Orson. She tries to get Orsonโs stool sample submitted to a lab for medical testing. The wildfires make everything difficult. Dust fills the air. She cannot find the right building. The technicians are about to go to lunch.
JoAnne uses her psychology skills to convince the lab technicians to accept the sample anyway. But later she gets a phone call from the hospital. The stool sample was not from Orson. It came from the family dog, Zeus. All her efforts were for nothing.
The episode also reveals that JoAnne does not even know Orsonโs correct birthday. She tells him his birthday is the same day as her dadโs dogโs birthday. Orson feels completely neglected by both parents.
JoAnne And Duncanโs Mutual Destruction Agreement
Duncan tries to blackmail JoAnne after discovering she has been insider trading with her clientsโ information. He thinks he has leverage over her. But JoAnne fights back hard.
She tells Duncan that if he gets her license cancelled, she will no longer be bound by doctor-patient confidentiality. โI will air all of your weird, skid-marked, filthy laundry,โ she says. โAnd I will gladly go down, so long as I take you with me.โ Both of them have secrets that can destroy the other. They are stuck together.
The Linus Po Story That Wins Carl Over
By the end of Episode 3, the wildfires have gotten so bad that only a determined person would leave home. Duncan knows Carl will be at the milkshake shop because nobody else is outside. He goes there one more time.
This time, Carl respects Duncanโs persistence. Duncan tells him a story about Linus Po, a musician who recently died. Everyone in Silicon Valley seems obsessed with Linus. Duncan once offered Linus $4.5 million to perform at his house. Linus did not want to do it. He played three songs, flipped Duncan off in front of all his guests, and called him disgusting.
But Duncan says he still won because Linus took the money. He hated himself afterward for accepting it. He never made music again. Duncan tells Carl that this is what success looks like. Making people betray their own principles for money.
Carl finally agrees to invest $300 million in Hypergnosis for a 7% stake. Duncan drives away victorious. But then he asks an AI to generate a song in Linus Poโs style with his own name in it. He insults a dead musician one last time on the day of his death.
