The Ghost in the Shell franchise has returned with a brand new television anime series. Produced by Science SARU, the studio behind DAN DA DAN and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, this adaptation brings Masamune Shirow’s classic cyberpunk manga to screens in 2026. What The Ghost in the Shell Is About
The story takes place in the year 2029 in Japan. The world has become highly information-intensive, with a vast corporate network covering the planet. Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg, leads an elite combat unit of fellow cyborgs. She envisions the creation of a specialized task force to preemptively strike against emerging threats. Meanwhile, Daisuke Aramaki of the Ministry of Home Affairs has been planning to establish a similar unit. He recruits Kusanagi and her team to form Public Security Section 9 — an aggressive tactical organization known as the “Shell Squad”.
Section 9 confronts complex cyber-crimes, terrorism, and high-level security threats. The investigation leads them to a mysterious hacker known only as “The Puppet Master”. This hacker can break into cybernetic brains, manipulate memories, and use people for their own goals without anyone noticing. For Kusanagi, this becomes a race against an opponent who operates almost invisibly in a fully connected world.
The series is produced by Science SARU and directed by Moko-chan. Maaya Sakamoto voices the protagonist Motoko Kusanagi, reprising her role from the Ghost in the Shell ARISE series. The rest of the Japanese cast includes Kazuhiro Yamaji as Daisuke Aramaki, Hiroki Yasumoto as Batou, Yuichi Nakamura as Togusa, and Kosuke Goto as Ishikawa.

It was also revealed that Major Kusanagi had manipulated the dreams of the Fuchikomas — the AI-equipped thinking tanks — to prevent the possibility of an AI robot uprising. The episode ended with the corrupt CEO of Hanka Precision Instruments meeting his comeuppance.
Episode 4 featured Kenichi Ogata as Colonel Tonoda and Masashi Ebara as the president of Hanka Seiki. The end card for the episode was drawn by Tetsuya Nishio.
