Dominic Monaghan’s legendary wizard hits rock bottom before finding a new purpose in the TNT fantasy series.
The Season 2 finale of The Librarians: The Next Chapter delivered a powerful message about obsession, control, and second chances. The episode titled “And the Camelot Conundrum” aired on September 7, 2026, and it put Merlin (Dominic Monaghan) through an emotional wringer that changed his character forever.
The finale showed the legendary wizard at his lowest point. Blinded by his obsession with magic and desperate for power, Merlin attempted to rewrite history by traveling back to Camelot. He pulled the sword from the stone, claimed the throne, and systematically took out the Librarians team one by one. But his victory turned hollow when he realized he had destroyed everything, including the kingdom he wanted to save.
Merlin’s Dark Turn and the Dream State Twist
Throughout Season 2, Merlin’s motives remained unclear. Was he a friend or a foe? The finale answered that question in a surprising way. Merlin’s hunger for control drove him to believe he could do a better job than King Arthur himself. Armed with knowledge of both past and future, he thought he could prevent humanity’s greatest tragedies.
But the Librarians had a trick up their sleeves. The entire Camelot conquest never actually happened. The team used a magical artifact to put Merlin into a dream state, making him experience the consequences of his actions. Creator Dean Devlin explained the thinking behind this choice:
“The idea is to take us through a redemption story and with any addict, they got to hit rock bottom. So, the question was, could they get Merlin to hit rock bottom?”
The team watched Merlin destroy everything in his dream, including killing his fellow Librarians one by one. Only after losing Vikram (Callum McGowan) did Merlin realize how far he had gone. That moment became the turning point that finally forced him to confront what his hunger for control had actually built.
A Humbling Experience for the Legendary Wizard
Dominic Monaghan, who plays Merlin, described his character’s journey as deeply humbling. In an interview with TV Insider, the actor reflected on what the finale meant for Merlin:
“I think that’s the real humbling moment for Merlin because you don’t see a massive amount of humanity in him. You see someone desperate for power, desperate to be the leader, to be the person who’s making the decisions. But then, when he realizes at the end that the Librarians have kind of tricked him, but they’ve also saved him as well, I think it’s a very humbling experience for him.”
Monaghan also noted that Merlin had become too far gone to question his actions during the dream. He was so blinded by his obsession that he couldn’t see the destruction he was causing until it was too late.
Merlin’s New Role as the Library’s Archivist
After Merlin hit rock bottom inside the illusion, the Librarians offered him a path to redemption. They gave him a new job: categorizing and preserving the magical artifacts of the Library. This role keeps him close to magic but with Excalibur keeping a watchful eye on him.
The team could have easily locked Merlin up or left him trapped in the dream state. Instead, they chose to help him. Dean Devlin explained that the team had complex feelings about this decision:
“They all, by the end of the season, feel like they’re doing the right thing, but they have very complex feelings about it.”
Monaghan highlighted the significance of the Librarians’ choice:
“Maybe a moment where, for the first time, he has to grapple with the fact that there are good people out there that want to do good things. And he could have gone down that path as well, but he chose not to.”
Merlin made sure the team knew that if they ever needed a knowledgeable, educated, and contrite magician, he would be there.
What the Finale Taught Merlin
The Season 2 finale taught Merlin a valuable lesson about the dangers of unchecked power and obsession. His attempt to control history and reshape the world according to his vision led to destruction rather than salvation. The dream state forced him to witness the consequences of his actions without any real-world harm.
The episode also showed that redemption is possible even after hitting rock bottom. Merlin’s new role as the Library’s archivist gives him a chance to start over and use his knowledge for good rather than personal gain.
Creator Dean Devlin left the door open for Dominic Monaghan to return in a potential third season. Devlin praised the actor’s work, saying:
“The guy is an absolute joy to work with and he elevated the character and I would do anything to get more of that character.”
