The Substitute has released its first teaser, showing three young men pulled into a dangerous deal on South Korea’s college entrance exam day. Starring Bae Hyeon Seong, Cha Kang Yoon, and Park Yoon Ho, the TVING original crime thriller will premiere on November 23. The teaser runs just under 30 seconds but sets up a tense story about pressure, secrets, and a choice that cannot be undone.
What the Teaser Shows
The clip opens with Nam Jae Yeop (Bae Hyeon Seong) asking a simple question: “Deal?” Text on screen follows: “One day that will decide your fate” and “A deal begins that will turn everything upside down.” At first, Jae Yeop seems to hold the power. Kang Geon Tae (Cha Kang Yoon) and Joo Hee Dong (Park Yoon Ho) are shown running, getting chased, and taking hits. The power balance shifts quickly. The teaser closes with a bruised and angry Jae Yeop saying, “There’s no one but that bastard. That bastard…”
The Story Behind the Deal
The Substitute (Korean title: 대리수능, Daerisuneung) follows Kang Geon Tae, a top-ranking scholarship student from a low-income family at the elite Jeonggyeong High School. He has no friends there except Joo Hee Dong. To survive, Geon Tae makes a choice that becomes his weakness. Nam Jae Yeop, a wealthy student who looks perfect on the outside, learns that weakness and blackmails Geon Tae into taking the college entrance exam for him. The story places South Korea’s fiercely competitive CSAT at the center of a crime thriller. What starts as one dishonest arrangement grows into a situation involving personal secrets, competing goals, and results that could follow the students long after the exam ends.
Who Plays Who
Bae Hyeon Seong plays Nam Jae Yeop, a student with a wealthy background, good looks, and strong grades. His perfect life is a front. When his path moves away from what his father planned, cracks appear and he begins to spiral.
Cha Kang Yoon plays Kang Geon Tae, a gifted student from a poor family who consistently ranks first at Jeonggyeong High School. Desperate to escape poverty, he accepts an unfair offer he cannot refuse and gets caught in a chain of events he cannot control.
Park Yoon Ho plays Joo Hee Dong, who looks up to Geon Tae as a role model and takes pride in being the only friend Geon Tae trusts. Jae Yeop’s arrival starts to break that friendship and brings unexpected changes into Hee Dong’s life.
The main cast is rounded out by Uhm Ji Won, Park Hyuk Kwon, and Baek Ji Won in supporting roles.
Director and Production Team
Park So-yeon, who directed the school thriller Pyramid Game, is behind the camera. New writer Choi Soo wrote the script. The series comes from Studio Dragon (planning) with Sidus and Studio Wooyoungsoo producing. The production team said the series adds suspense to familiar subjects like the college entrance exam and university admissions, calling it a dangerous game played by three young men who each hold another’s weakness.
