Production is now moving fast for The White Lotus season 4, with cameras rolling across the French Riviera. The new season brings a major change: instead of a resort full of regular rich tourists, the show now focuses on American movie stars clashing with local French residents during the Cannes Film Festival.
HBO confirmed that filming started in mid-April 2026 at luxury hotels in Cannes, Saint-Tropez, and Monaco. The story takes place over one week during the famous film festival, adding a new layer of show business drama to the Mike White formula.
Laura Dern Joins After Helena Bonham Carter Leaves Suddenly
The biggest casting news came at the end of April 2026 when Laura Dern signed on to replace Helena Bonham Carter. Bonham Carter left the production just four days into filming. HBO explained that “it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.”
The network said the role was “rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast.” Instead of simply replacing Bonham Carter, Mike White wrote a completely new character for Dern. This is not the first time Dern and White have worked together. They teamed up before on the 2007 film Year of the Dog and the HBO series Enlightened. Fans of season two may also remember Dern’s voice cameo as Abby, the estranged wife of Michael Imperioli’s character.
The news hit social media quickly, and many viewers expressed excitement about the change.
“Laura Dern in The White Lotus is a dream. Mike White knows exactly what he is doing with her,” one user posted on X.
Another fan wrote: “Losing Helena Bonham Carter hurts, but gaining Laura Dern is a fair trade. This season will be wild.”
American Stars vs. French Locals at Cannes
According to the official HBO synopsis, season four “follows a new group of White Lotus hotel guests and employees over the span of a week, taking place during the Cannes Film Festival.” The setting allows the show to make fun of the entertainment industry directly, something earlier seasons only touched on.
The clash between American movie stars attending the festival and the local French residents of Cannes creates a natural conflict. The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 12 to May 23 each year, bringing thousands of celebrities, reporters, and industry workers to the small coastal city. Locals often complain about crowds, high prices, and the attitudes of visiting stars.
Full Cast List for Season 4
The season four cast brings together a large group of well-known actors. HBO has confirmed the following names for the upcoming season:
Main cast: Steve Coogan, Kumail Nanjiani, AJ Michalka, Chloe Bennet, Max Greenfield, Vincent Cassel, Alexander Ludwig, Marissa Long, Chris Messina, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Dylan Ennis, Corentin Fila, Ari Graynor, Nadia Tereszkiewicz, and Sandra Bernhard
Additional cast: Heather Graham, Rosie Perez, Frida Gustavsson, Charlie Hall, Jarrad Paul, Ben Schnetzer, and Laura Smet
Vincent Cassel, a French actor known for Black Swan and Ocean’s Twelve, offers a direct link to the local side of the story. His casting suggests viewers will see the festival from both the celebrity and the French perspective.
Filming Locations Across the French Riviera
The production is using real luxury hotels as the fictional White Lotus properties. The Airelles Chateau de la Messardiere in Saint-Tropez stands in as the White Lotus du Cap. The historic Hotel Martinez on the famous Croisette in Cannes becomes the White Lotus Cannes.
Crews are also filming additional scenes in Paris and Monaco, although the main story stays on the Côte d’Azur. The production will be active during the actual Cannes Film Festival this May, potentially adding real festival energy to the show.
