HBO explained that “it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.”
The network said the role was “rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast.” Instead of simply replacing Bonham Carter, Mike White wrote a completely new character for Dern.
