This caption suggests that Diesel is playfully indicating that a potential announcement for The Arbor King at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con did not happen because this version of Groot is simply too large for the venue.
He also included the hashtags #TheArborKing and #AlphaGroot with the post. This has led many fans to believe these titles are connected to a potential Groot story. While the post does not reveal much about the project’s official status, it does show that Diesel is keeping the idea very much alive in the public eye.
Vin Diesel Has Been Teasing ‘The Arbor King’ for a Long Time

He has also used similar language in the past. Over a year ago, he posted about being deep in development and writing on many characters. He mentioned reading The Arbor King to his family, calling it the long-awaited story of Groot’s return to Planet X. He has also said, “Disney wants their Planet X! Which some say is Marvel’s most anticipated movie, haha. The film where Groot returns to his home planet.”
His repeated references to the project have kept fans guessing. However, despite all these teasers, no other person associated with the MCU has publicly spoken about this project. Marvel Studios has also stayed completely silent on the matter.
What Could ‘The Arbor King’ Be About?
If The Arbor King does become a reality, there is a rich history from the Marvel comics that the movie could explore. In the comics, Groot is a Flora colossus from Planet X. This planet is ruled by an elite governing class known as the Arbor Masters.
According to Marvel Comics lore, these leaders teach young members of their species, called saplings, through a process called “Photonic Knowledge.” This process allows the accumulated knowledge of older generations to be absorbed by the young through a kind of photosynthesis. This practice gives the Flora Colossi genius-level intelligence.
However, the Arbor Masters are also known for enslaving small creatures called Maintenance Mammals and treating them poorly. Groot, who finds friends among these creatures, does his best to protect them. Additionally, Groot has a royal lineage and is connected to the title of King Groot in the comics.
Diesel’s tease about an “Alpha Groot” could mean the project might follow an alternate, more powerful version of the character or an ancestor of the Groot we know. There is a lot of material about Groot and his species that could be explored in a potential film.
The ‘I Am Groot’ Series Showed the Character Can Lead
Before any talk of a movie, Marvel already gave Groot his own solo adventure in the form of a Disney+ series. The animated show I Am Groot premiered in 2022 and focused on Baby Groot’s adventures between major MCU events. A second season was released in 2023.
The series was well-received by both critics and audiences. It currently holds an 89% Tomatometer score and a 74% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. The success of this show proved that there is a strong appetite for standalone Groot stories.
Marvel Has Not Confirmed the Spin-Off
Even with all of Vin Diesel’s teasing, it is important to remember that Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed that a Groot spin-off movie is in development. The Arbor King remains just a concept title that Diesel has been promoting on social media for months.
At San Diego Comic-Con and D23 in 2026, Marvel revealed a variety of future projects. However, The Arbor King was not among them. This shows that if the project is real, it is likely still in very early development or being kept under a tight lid.
