The Story Behind The Revolutionaries

The Revolutionaries is set in the decades following the Revolt of 1857, a time when revolutionary groups across India started organizing against British rule. The series follows four young individuals who took up armed resistance against the British Empire. These revolutionaries operated through secret networks, faced political conspiracies, and made personal sacrifices for the cause of freedom.

The show is inspired by historian and author Sanjeev Sanyal’s bestselling book Revolutionaries: The Other Story Of How India Won Its Freedom. The book argues for greater attention to revolutionary movements that ran alongside the more well-known parts of India’s independence struggle. The series expands that material into a large-scale drama centered on the people who participated in those movements.

Nikkhil Advani, who created and directed the series, spoke about his approach to the project. He said the series focuses on “the lesser-known heroes of pre-independence India”.

“What excited me most about The Revolutionaries was the opportunity to shine a light on the lesser-known heroes of pre-independence India. While inspired by real events and the extraordinary stories of courage documented in Sanjeev Sanyal’s eponymous book, we have approached the series as a character-driven action drama that explores rebellion, sacrifice, friendship, and freedom through an emotional and cinematic lens.”

Main Cast and Their Characters

The series features a strong ensemble cast. Here is a breakdown of the main actors and the historical figures they play:

Bhuvan Bam plays Rash Behari Bose, a key figure in the revolutionary movement.

Rohit Saraf portrays Sachindra Nath Sanyal, another revolutionary who dedicated his life to the freedom struggle.

Pratibha Lahiri is introduced as a woman who backed the revolution from the front. Bagha Jatin is depicted as the fearless one, always ready to face danger. Sachindra Nath Sanyal is shown as a young man who opened both his home and heart for the revolution.

The Creative Team Behind the Series

Nikkhil Advani serves as the creator and director of The Revolutionaries. He has previously directed films such as Kal Ho Naa Ho, D-Day, Batla House, and Satyameva Jayate. His recent television work includes Freedom at Midnight, which also focused on stories from India’s history. This series marks another collaboration between Advani and Prime Video following their work on Mumbai Diaries.

The producers described the project as a labor of love. They said bringing a project of this scale and historical significance to life demanded a strong commitment to creating a show that is both entertaining and bold.

“Bringing a project of this scale and historical significance to life demanded an unwavering commitment to the vision of creating a show that is as entertaining as it is audacious. We are incredibly proud of what Nikkhil has achieved as a storyteller here, and of the cast and crew who poured themselves into every frame with conviction and heart.”

What to Expect from The Revolutionaries

The Revolutionaries is built as a character-driven action drama rather than a straightforward historical documentary. The series combines historical events with the personal relationships between its central revolutionaries. It explores themes of rebellion, sacrifice, friendship, betrayal, and the choices that shaped an important chapter of India’s struggle for independence.

Nikhil Madhok, Director and Head of SVOD Originals at Prime Video India, described the series as an adrenaline-fueled show built around four brave individuals and their efforts to mobilize armed resistance against the British Empire.

“India’s freedom struggle remains one of the most extraordinary chapters in human history, filled with stories of courage and sacrifice that continue to resonate across generations. Sanjeev Sanyal’s book sheds light on so many such remarkable characters and events, and we are proud to have adapted some of those stories for this series.”

He added that the series brings together Advani’s vision, an immersive world, and powerful performances from the lead cast to tell a story that will move and entertain audiences in India and around the world.

The show is set to premiere exclusively on Prime Video from September 11 across India and more than 240 countries and territories. With its focus on lesser-known heroes, The Revolutionaries aims to bring forgotten stories of courage to a global audience.
