The Tomb Raider television series, starring Sophie Turner as Lara Croft, has run into serious trouble with British safety authorities. The production company behind the Amazon MGM Studios show violated UK workplace safety laws while filming at Shinfield Studios earlier this year.
Britain’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigated the production and found multiple breaches of safety regulations. The issues did not involve Turner’s injury but related to how the crew was protected while working with dangerous materials.
What Safety Rules Did the Production Break?
The HSE determined that Project Temple Productions Ltd, the company producing the series, broke two major UK laws:
- The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
- The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002
The main problem was with isocyanate paints. These paints are commonly used on film sets but can be dangerous when sprayed. The HSE found that Project Temple did not make sure crew members went through “biological monitoring” to check if safety measures were working properly.
Isocyanate exposure is one of the leading causes of asthma in the workplace. The HSE guidance says workers must wear proper protective equipment when spraying these paints. The paint also releases an “invisible mist” that can take up to 20 minutes to clear from the air.
The production team also did not have the right safety gear for crew members. They failed to factor in the clearance time needed after the paint was used.
The Improvement Notice and Fix
The HSE issued an improvement notice to Project Temple Productions in April 2026. This is a formal order telling a company to fix safety problems.
The company had to take action quickly. By May 19, 2026, Project Temple had fixed all the issues and followed the rules. Records on the HSE website confirm the company complied within a month.
A Rare Action Against TV Productions
The HSE does not often get involved with television shoots. Over the past four years, only four productions have received such notices from the safety watchdog. The Tomb Raider series is the highest-profile among them.
Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment on the matter.
Sophie Turner’s Injury Was a Separate Issue
Earlier this year, Sophie Turner suffered an injury while filming. The Game of Thrones actor aggravated a pre-existing back problem due to the long hours on set.
Production was paused for about two weeks so Turner could recover. The studio confirmed at the time that Turner experienced a “minor injury” and paused production as a precaution.
The HSE ruling is not connected to Turner’s injury. The safety violations were found during a separate inspection.

Production began in January 2026 in the UK. Amazon MGM Studios released a first-look image of Turner as Lara Croft when filming started.
The series is expected to release on Prime Video in 2027. A specific premiere date has not been announced.
Turner previously told the LA Times that the series focuses on Lara Croft’s character and what drives her, rather than just her appearance. She said Lara is “unashamedly capable” and does not hide her strengths.
The Tomb Raider franchise began as a video game in 1996 and has sold over 100 million copies worldwide. Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander have previously played Lara Croft in films.
