What Is Breathless Love Korean Movie About

The story centers on Hwa Ran and Yi Wan, a couple in their 20s who have nothing but love and their dreams. Hwa Ran wants to become a webtoon artist, while Yi Wan hopes to make it as a rapper. After moving out of a tiny gosiwon (a small studio room), they take out a loan for a rental deposit. A real estate agent scams them out of the money, leaving them with no choice but to move into a basement apartment two floors underground. The basement is full of mold, and they cannot tell whether it is day or night. The film mixes humor with the harsh realities of young adulthood, as shown in the poster taglines: “There’s no such thing as a cheap and good home” and “We have love, but no home.”

The Realistic Story Behind Breathless Love Korean Movie

The film’s plot draws from a common struggle in South Korea: the difficulty of finding affordable housing in one’s twenties. The couple’s dream of a simple life together gets crushed by a rental deposit scam, a crime that has affected many young renters in the country. The basement apartment becomes a symbol of their situation: they have each other, but their living conditions are barely livable. Despite the difficult circumstances, Hwa Ran and Yi Wan keep bickering and supporting each other, showing the ups and downs of young love in a realistic way. The film asks a simple question: can the couple escape the basement while holding onto both their dreams and their relationship?

Who Is Behind Breathless Love

Go Hyoung Ju directed the film. The project was originally linked to director Kim Cho Hee and actors Byun Yo Han and Jung Yu Mi in December 2024, but that version was shelved due to financial difficulties and lack of investment. The film was later revived with Kim Hyang Gi and Ahn Dong Gu in the lead roles, with Go Hyoung Ju taking the director’s chair. KT StudioGenie produced the film, with a runtime of 1 hour and 40 minutes.
