Fans waited weeks for the promised showdown between Ayanokoji and first-year student Tsubasa Nanase. Episode 12 did not hold back. Within the first few minutes, Nanase dropped her friendly act and attacked Ayanokoji on a mountain summit. But the episode offered much more than just one fight.

The Truth About Nanase’s Mission Finally Comes Out

Day 7 of the survival exam started like any other. Ayanokoji and Nanase traveled together toward their next checkpoint. The path required crossing a mountain. Ayanokoji noticed rain clouds and suggested taking a safer detour. Nanase pushed hard to take the mountain route instead.

Once they reached the top, isolated from other students, Nanase stopped walking. She put down her bag and told Ayanokoji the truth. Acting Chairman Tsukishiro sent her to hurt Ayanokoji, set off his emergency alarm, and get him expelled from the school.

The fight that followed showed a side of Nanase no one expected. She moved with incredible speed and power. At one point, she seemed to shift into a different personality—a second self connected to a boy named Matsuo Ichiro. This boy had ties to Ayanokoji’s past escape from the White Room.

Ayanokoji blocked her attacks but did not strike back. Fighting back would mean both students getting expelled. Instead, he dodged and ran while Nanase kept coming at him with full force.

Amasawa Destroys Kushida’s Mask in Brutal Fashion

While Ayanokoji dealt with Nanase on the mountain, another major confrontation played out elsewhere on the island. Ichika Amasawa confronted Kushida Kikyou, and the result shocked viewers.

Kushida spent her entire time at the school wearing a perfect mask. Sweet and helpful on the outside, poisonous and manipulative on the inside. Amasawa saw through everything. She ripped off Kushida’s mask—literally and figuratively—and tore apart her schemes with a cold smile.

The rain fell hard during this scene. Kushida stood there processing what just happened. Someone finally stood up to her without fear or hesitation. Amasawa did not fall for any of Kushida’s tricks. She simply exposed everything and walked away.

Fans called this one of the most satisfying moments of the entire series.

“Amasawa humiliated Kushida, Ayanokoji showed what he is capable of, Ichinose heard what she should not have, and there is still someone in the forest with a wooden club with dubious plans for our protagonist.” – Anime reviewer Diego Almeida

Ayanokoji’s Response Changes Everything

Many expected Ayanokoji to show mercy after defeating Nanase. He did not. Instead, he spoke to her with a cold, logical calm that reminded viewers of Season 1.

Nanase broke down after the fight. She revealed her childhood connection to Matsuo Ichiro, a boy she admired. After Ayanokoji escaped the White Room, Matsuo’s father lost his life as punishment. This destroyed Matsuo’s family completely. Tsukishiro used Nanase’s grief and anger to turn her against Ayanokoji.

With her mission failed and secrets exposed, Nanase saw no reason to stay at the school. Ayanokoji did not offer sympathy. He gave her a logical reason to remain. He explained that the only way to hold Tsukishiro accountable was for Ayanokoji to stay enrolled. If the chairman succeeded in expelling him, no one would ever pay for what happened to Matsuo’s family.

Ayanokoji then reflected on the difference between himself and his father. He admitted that even someone shaped entirely by cold calculation can still find a reason to reach out to others.

What Critics Are Saying About Episode 12

Reviewers praised Episode 12 as one of the best in the entire anime series. The animation quality stood out as the most polished of the season, especially during the Ayanokoji vs. Nanase fight sequence. The close-up shots of Nanase’s eyes during combat received particular attention.

Some critics noted the fight felt too short. Others pointed out that Nanase’s “second personality” seemed like an easy writing choice for a series known for subtle character building. But most agreed the episode delivered exactly what fans wanted.

The episode earned a 9 out of 10 rating from multiple reviewers, with many calling it the turning point that justified watching the entire season.

The Mystery Person in the Rain

Episode 12 ended with a shadowed figure walking through the rain, gripping a wooden club. Someone is coming after Ayanokoji, and the season has not revealed who yet.

With four episodes remaining in the 16-episode season, the tension keeps building. Episode 13 is scheduled for June 3, 2026, and fans expect the action to continue without slowing down.
