The Emmy-winning comedy Hacks said farewell on May 28, 2026, after five seasons of sharp jokes and messy relationships. The series finale, streaming on HBO Max, brought the story of Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) to a close with a major emotional twist that no one saw coming.

The final episode starts with Ava finally running her own show. She walks through the set of her new sitcom, giving orders and managing a crew. The scene directly mirrors how Deborah was introduced in the very first episode of the series. Co-creator Lucia Aniello confirmed this was intentional. “We really made sure it looked the same,” she said during a post-screening Q&A in Los Angeles. “The idea is that we started with this story of Deborah and over the course of the series the two of them have really blended in so many ways.”

But the celebration does not last long.

Deborah’s Secret Trip To Paris Turns Into A Fight For Life

After opening her new casino, The Diva, Deborah takes Ava to Paris. What looks like a reward for hard work quickly turns dark. Deborah reveals that the cancerous mass she removed earlier in the season has returned and spread to other parts of her body.

She tells Ava she does not want treatment. Instead, she plans to go to an assisted suicide facility in Zurich. “I want to go out on top,” Deborah explains. Ava refuses to accept this. The two spend the episode arguing in beautiful Paris locations, from outdoor cafes to the Louvre.

Co-creator Jen Statsky said the writers wanted to balance the heavy topic with the show’s signature humor. “We want to make people laugh but we also want to honor the amazing platform we have been given,” she stated.

“The purpose of having her be sick was for the ultimate redemption, the idea of the comedy and writing together saving her life.” – Lucia Aniello, Co-creator of Hacks

Ava tries everything to change Deborah’s mind. She does research on new treatments. She uses negotiation tricks Deborah taught her, like “the opening offer is never final.” For a while, nothing works. Deborah seems set on her decision, and Ava finally agrees to go with her to the train station heading to Zurich.

A Simple Joke Changes Everything At The Last Minute

At the train station, while waiting for their departure, the two women start doing what they do best: writing jokes. They riff about the worst parts of dying. Ava jokes about leaving money to dogs. Deborah fires back with her own punchlines.

Ava walks toward the train. Deborah hangs back for a second to write something down. Then she chases after Ava. “The worst part about dying is I can’t even enjoy being bone thin… that’s the better joke,” she yells.

That moment changes everything. Deborah realizes she is not done creating. The act of making a joke better—of chasing the perfect punchline—reminds her why she keeps living.

“I may not have 30 years, but I think I have another hour. Will you help me write it?” – Deborah Vance to Ava Daniels

Ava answers “Always,” and the two hug in the middle of the station. Deborah chooses to keep fighting, not because she is suddenly optimistic about her health, but because the work is not finished.

Every Character Gets A Proper Sendoff In The Final Season

The finale does not ignore the rest of the cast. Marcus (Carl Clemons-Hopkins) opens his own venue in Las Vegas. Deborah publicly thanks him for his years of loyalty during The Diva’s opening night.

Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) and Kayla (Megan Stalter) finally win their battle against Kayla’s father. They find evidence he sold dead clients’ voices to AI companies. They use this to take over his company, creating a new “mid-size Latitude” that puts artists first.

Jean Smart called the ending “absolutely perfect.” Hannah Einbinder admitted filming the final scenes was physically hard. “I became ill,” she told USA Today. “The second I walked out of where we were shooting, and I was doubled over. My body was shutting down.”

The final shot shows Deborah and Ava walking arm-in-arm down the Las Vegas Strip. Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand’s “Happy Days Are Here Again” plays in the background. The show ends not with a death, but with a promise. These two will keep writing, keep fighting, and keep making each other better for as long as they have left.

The series finale of Hacks is now available for streaming on HBO Max in the USA. UK viewers can watch on Sky Comedy and NOW. Australian audiences can find the final season on Stan. Canadian viewers can stream on Crave.
