Netflix’s new documentary A Child of My Own tells the true story of a woman who faked her pregnancy for months and then kidnapped a newborn baby from a hospital in Mexico City. The film, which arrived on the streaming platform on August 13, 2026, has grabbed attention for its unusual storytelling approach. The first half plays out like a scripted drama with actors, while the second half features interviews with the real people involved.
The documentary explores the life of Eleonor Alejandra Marin Mendoza, also known as Ale. She felt enormous pressure from her husband and his family to have a child. After suffering multiple miscarriages, she chose to hide her third pregnancy loss and continued pretending she was expecting. The lie grew bigger until she committed a crime that sent her to prison for over 13 years.
The Crime That Shook Mexico
Mendoza married Arturo Calderon Gamino in July 2000 when she was just 17 years old. She was already pregnant at the time, but that pregnancy ended in a miscarriage. Over the next several years, she experienced more pregnancy losses and went through IVF treatments. By the time she was 25, she had suffered her third miscarriage.
Instead of telling anyone about the loss, Mendoza kept it a secret. She deliberately gained weight to make it look like she was still pregnant. She also changed her own medical records using her job at the hospital’s obstetrics and gynecology department. She even faked medical reports and got maternity leave after attending a doctor’s appointment with her husband.
Mendoza worked as an administrator at the Hospital General de México. She claimed that she met a pregnant woman named Mayra Navarro at the hospital and that Navarro agreed to give her the baby after birth. However, Navarro has always denied this. She said she never met Mendoza before the day she gave birth and never agreed to give her child away.
On a day in June 2009, CCTV footage showed Mendoza leaving the hospital carrying a large gift bag. Inside that bag was a newborn baby girl named Katya Valentina. Mendoza took the baby to a hotel in Mexico City with her husband. Police tracked them down and arrested the couple about eight hours later. The baby was found unharmed and returned to her mother.

Mendoza is no longer in prison. She was released in 2022, according to multiple reports. Some sources say she was released in 2023. The difference likely comes from how the sentence was calculated, but most reports agree she has served her time and is now a free woman.
Today, Mendoza lives in Mexico. She and her husband Arturo are still together. Their relationship went through a difficult period after her release. Arturo still wanted to become a biological father, but Mendoza did not want to go through more pregnancy treatments. The couple briefly separated. During that time, Arturo had a son with another woman. However, they later got back together. The documentary shows the couple playing with Arturo’s young son in a park.
Mendoza spoke about her feelings in the documentary. She said, “It makes me very happy to see him smile and to be fulfilled as a father”. She also shared that becoming part of his son’s life made her “even happier”.
What Happened to Arturo Calderon Gamino?
Arturo spent two years and six months in prison after his arrest. He was initially seen as an accomplice in the kidnapping. However, Mendoza always insisted that he had “nothing to do with” the crime. He was eventually acquitted of all charges.
Arturo has said that he truly believed his wife was pregnant. He did not know about her miscarriage or her plan to take another woman’s baby. In the documentary, he talked about how badly he wanted to be a father. He admitted that he put pressure on his wife to have a child.
When Arturo found out what Mendoza had done, he was filled with rage. He questioned their entire marriage. But after spending time in prison, his feelings began to change. Today, he and Mendoza are together and raising his young son.
The Documentary’s Unique Approach
Director Maite Alberdi, a two-time Oscar nominee, took a creative approach with A Child of My Own. The first 50 minutes of the film are a scripted recreation of Mendoza’s version of events. Actors play the roles of Mendoza, Arturo, and their families. Ana Celeste plays Mendoza, and Armando Espitia plays Arturo.
The second half of the documentary shifts to a more traditional format. It includes interviews with the real Mendoza, Arturo, Mayra Navarro, and the judge who handled the case. The film also presents court records and expert testimony.
Alberdi explained her reasoning for this structure. She told Netflix’s Tudum, “When we think of reenactments in documentaries, we usually think of reconstructing facts. But what we were staging here was a point of view”. She felt that showing the story through Mendoza’s eyes was important to help viewers understand her mindset.
The director also spoke about including Mayra’s perspective. Alberdi said, “The film would be entirely different without her. Because she gives us the perspective of a different kind of pain”.

The Legal Outcome
Mendoza was found guilty of kidnapping on November 9, 2011. The court found her criminally responsible for the unlawful kidnapping of a minor under 16 years of age. She was sentenced to 13 years and four months in prison. She also had to pay a fine.
The baby, Katya Valentina, was returned to her mother, Mayra Navarro, unharmed. Mayra has consistently denied that she ever agreed to give her child to Mendoza.
