The Gang traded Paddy’s Pub for turkey legs and jousting fields in the latest episode of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Season 18 Episode 5, titled “The Gang Goes to the Ren Faire,” premiered on September 7, 2026. The episode sent Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), and Dee (Kaitlin Olson) to a local Renaissance Faire with a mission to get on the Quilt of Legends. Charlie (Charlie Day) found a new love for playing the lute, while Frank (Danny DeVito) tried to buy the entire faire from his old enemies, the McPoyles. But the real twist came from Dee, who secretly controlled everything from behind the scenes.
Dee Became the Mastermind Behind the Chaos
Throughout the episode, Dee kept trying to “drive a story” while the rest of the Gang ignored her. But by the end, she proved she was the one pulling all the strings. Dee tricked the king’s men and secretly replaced Mac during a horse jousting challenge. She also set up the entire conflict between Frank and the McPoyles.
One review compared Dee to a Littlefinger-type character from Game of Thrones. She manipulated events from the shadows and acted as a kingmaker. The episode showed that Dee, often treated as the group’s punching bag, was actually the reason everything came together.
Frank Faced Off With the McPoyles in a Staring Contest
Frank’s plan to buy the Renaissance Faire land hit a wall when the king refused to sell. Frank called the king dishonorable and got pulled into a royal challenge. The challenge turned out to be a staring contest. The king blinked first, but then Frank had to face a horse joust. The king’s people demanded an eye as the prize for winning.
The McPoyle clan made their return in this episode. Jimmi Simpson and Nate Mooney came back as Liam and Ryan McPoyle. But the big surprise was Guillermo del Toro joining the cast as Pappy McPoyle, the family patriarch.
Dennis Crossed a Line That Shocked Even Charlie
The episode pushed Dennis into dark territory. He did something so terrible in front of Charlie that Charlie told him he could not be his friend anymore. One review noted that we never see exactly what Dennis does, but the reactions from Charlie and the women involved made it clear that it was worse than anyone imagined.
“You don’t come into ‘The Gang Goes to the Ren Faire’ expecting this whole battle of who will gain the empire storyline.”
