The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 is finally here. Prime Video dropped the first three episodes on June 3, 2026, and the team is back in action. The new season picks up one year after the defeat of the Chroma Conclave. The group has gone their separate ways. But something dark is waking up in Exandria. A cult worshipping a figure called the Whispered One is growing. And Vox Machina has to come together again to face their biggest threat yet.
The first three episodes are funny, violent, and emotional. They set the stage for what looks like the most serious season of the show so far.
Grog Gives a Musical Recap and the Team Is Scattered
Season 4 opens with a fantastic musical recap sung by Grog (voiced by Travis Willingham). The recap reminds viewers of everything that happened in the first three seasons. It is colorful, funny, and very much in character for the barbarian Goliath.
After the recap, audiences see where everyone has ended up. Pike (Ashley Johnson) and Grog are traveling together. Pike is struggling with a crisis of faith. The events of last season left her questioning whether she has done any real good in the world. Grog tries to cheer her up with drinks and stories of adventure.
Percy (Taliesin Jaffe) and Vex (Laura Bailey) are in Whitestone. Percy is obsessed with studying an anti-magic orb left behind by the Briarwoods. He ignores his duties as a lord. Vex is trying to adjust to life as a noble. She goes from hunting monsters to hosting boring dinner parties. Their scenes together have great chemistry.
Vax (Liam OโBrien) and Keyleth (Marisha Ray) are finishing Keylethโs Aramente. Scanlan (Sam Riegel) is nowhere to be found. He left the team at the end of Season 3 and went on a world tour.
Wayne Brady Joins as New Character Taryon Darrington
Scanlan is missing, but the show fills that gap with a new character. Wayne Brady voices Taryon Darrington, a rich fanboy who loves Vox Machina. Taryon fancies himself an adventurer. He travels with his own robot biographer named Doty. Brady brings a lot of energy to the role. The character is funny and full of himself but also charming.
Early reviews say Taryon fits right in with the chaotic energy of the team. He shows up in the first episode and immediately gets involved in a fight. Fans of the original Critical Role campaign will recognize Taryon. He joins the team in the original story when Scanlan leaves temporarily.
The Whispered One Cult Is the New Villain
The main threat in Season 4 is a cult. These people worship a mysterious figure called the Whispered One. They have been growing in power for the past year. They promise immortality to their followers. They want to destroy the old order and defy the gods themselves.
Longtime fans will know that the Whispered One is Vecna. He was teased as far back as Season 1 when Delilah Briarwood mentioned him. Vecna is one of the most powerful enemies in the original Critical Role campaign. The show has been building toward this fight for a long time.
The cult is different from past villains. Vox Machina has faced dragons and monsters before. Now they are fighting regular people who truly believe in their cause. These cultists are hard to kill and willing to die for their master.
Pikeโs Faith Crisis Takes Center Stage
One of the strongest storylines in the first three episodes belongs to Pike. Ashley Johnson gives a powerful performance as the gnome cleric. Pike is struggling. She has lost faith in herself and in the gods. She questions whether Vox Machina actually saved anyone or just caused more suffering.
In one key scene, Pike and Grog chase after a person from Pikeโs past. The encounter forces Pike to confront her doubts. It is a serious moment in a show that is usually full of jokes and violence. Critics are praising how the show handles this character arc.
Percy and Vex Deal With Politics and a Dangerous Orb
Back in Whitestone, Percy is up to his old tricks. He cannot stop trying to understand the anti-magic orb. The orb is dangerous. Playing with it could destroy the city. But Percy is obsessed.
Vex wants him to focus on being a lord. She wants a normal life. But she also misses adventure. The tension between the two characters is real and relatable. They love each other, but they want different things. Laura Bailey and Taliesin Jaffe play off each other perfectly in these scenes.
Vax Deals With the Matron of Ravens
Vax made a deal with the Matron of Ravens in Season 2. He broke that promise in Season 3. Now he is paying the price. The Matron is not happy. Vax sees scary visions of what is coming. He knows something bad is about to happen.
Keyleth is also struggling. She is trying to complete her Aramente to become the Voice of the Tempest. But she is distracted by her feelings for Vax and the growing danger in the world.
Action and Animation Are Better Than Ever
The action in Season 4 is fantastic. The fights are easy to follow but still intense. The animation uses bright colors and dynamic camera work. There is one CGI creature in the first episode that looks a bit rough. But overall, the visuals are a step up from previous seasons.
The show also does not hold back on violence. Blood and gore are everywhere. This is an adult animated series, and it earns that rating.
