Mark Ruffalo is fighting back after Paramount Pictures accused him of making antisemitic remarks. The actor strongly rejected the label and said his criticism of the company’s business dealings has nothing to do with hatred toward Jewish people.
The disagreement started when Ruffalo spoke out against the Ellison family and their connection to the Israel-Gaza war. Paramount responded by calling his comments antisemitic. Ruffalo did not stay quiet and fired back with a strong statement on social media.
What Mark Ruffalo Said About the Antisemitic Accusation
On August 22, Ruffalo took to X (formerly Twitter) to address the situation directly. He called the accusation “appalling and fundamentally dishonest.”
“The accusation that I am antisemitic is appalling and fundamentally dishonest. Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract, or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people.”
Ruffalo made it clear that his comments were aimed at political and corporate actions, not at Jewish people. He said that people often wrongly frame criticism of Israel as antisemitism.
“This critical and necessary dialogue is then dishonestly framed as being anti-Israel. To be clear, my views come from my own political convictions and should never be interpreted as hostility toward Jewish people, for whom I have deep love and respect.”
The 58-year-old actor also shared how Jewish friends and colleagues have shaped his life and career.
“Everything I know about acting, activism, and humanism has been profoundly shaped by the Jewish friends, colleagues, and loved ones who have been integral and family throughout every point of my life.”
Why Paramount Called Ruffalo’s Remarks Antisemitic
The fight began when Ruffalo shared a video clip on his Instagram Stories on August 21. The clip showed Safra Catz, who is Oracle’s executive vice chair and a Paramount board member. In the video, Catz talked about technology that Oracle provided to the Israeli military after the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack.
Ruffalo used the clip to criticize the Ellison family. Larry Ellison is the co-founder of Oracle and the father of David Ellison, who runs Paramount Skydance. Ruffalo accused them of “powering some of the most destructive and inhuman forces in the world.”
He also spoke against the planned $111 billion merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery. He warned that the deal would give one family too much control over major media outlets like CNN, HBO, and Warner Bros.
“This merger has real consequences for real people, and for the entire country. Scrutinizing the Ellisons, including Oracle’s business built on data, surveillance technology and government contracts, and the serious threat to editorial freedom and the loss of a livelihood for thousands of families, is fair and necessary.”
Paramount responded on August 21 with a strong statement. The company said it was troubled by what it called “antisemitic tropes” being used in a business dispute.
“We are, as always, troubled when antisemitic tropes are invoked in purported service of a business dispute. Words like ‘genocide’ and ‘apartheid,’ applied to a corporate transaction, aren’t just wrong — they’re a bridge too far, and they cheapen the very real suffering those words are meant to describe.”
Paramount also said it does not tolerate prejudice against anyone and asked for less rhetoric and more understanding.
The Bigger Picture Behind the Dispute
This disagreement is not just about one comment. It connects to a much larger corporate battle. Paramount Skydance wants to buy Warner Bros. Discovery in a deal worth over $110 billion. The merger is currently on hold because of an antitrust lawsuit filed by 12 state attorneys general.
Ruffalo has been one of the most vocal critics of this deal. He argues that the merger would harm workers, reduce competition, and give too much power to one family. He also raised concerns about foreign money and its influence on editorial decisions.
Larry Ellison, who is a major supporter of former President Donald Trump, is helping fund his son David’s acquisition through Oracle. Ruffalo pointed out that Oracle has government contracts and surveillance technology that could be misused if the merger goes through.
Ruffalo Stands Firm on His Political Views
Despite the backlash, Ruffalo is not backing down. He made it clear that his opposition to the merger and his criticism of the Israeli government come from his political beliefs. He stressed that these views should never be seen as hatred toward Jewish people.
He also warned that the technology Oracle provided to the Israeli military could end up being part of one of the largest media companies in the world.
“These ‘really profoundly scary technologies’ will most likely be merged into one of the largest media conglomerates in the world and one day used on you.”
Ruffalo called the situation a “genocide” that “was built on an apartheid system of oppression powered by Oracle.”
What Others Are Saying
Not everyone agrees with Ruffalo. Ari Engel, who leads the advocacy group Creative Community for Peace, sided with Paramount.
“Mark Ruffalo’s rhetoric has increasingly crossed the line from criticism of Israel into extremist and antisemitic messaging.”
This is not the first time Ruffalo has faced criticism for his words about Israel. In 2021, he apologized for calling Israel’s actions “genocide” during an earlier conflict. He later admitted the term was “inaccurate” and “inflammatory.”

The Merger and What Happens Next
The Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger remains blocked for now. A federal judge is reviewing the antitrust lawsuit, and a decision may not come until June 2027.
Paramount has said the lawsuit is the only thing stopping the deal from moving forward. California Governor Gavin Newsom and other officials have shown support for settlement talks.
Ruffalo continues to push for more transparency. He wants regulators to give the public clear answers before allowing the merger to happen.
