Spider-Man: Brand New Day has shattered box office records, but Marvel Studios might be walking into dangerous territory by making Peter Parker the key figure for the next phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The fourth Spider-Man movie, which hit theaters on July 31, 2026, has set up Tom Holland’s character as a central player in the upcoming Avengers films and the planned Mutant Saga. However, this strategy comes with a major catch that could put the entire MCU at risk.
The movie opened with a massive $360 million in North America during its first weekend, beating Avengers: Endgame’s $357 million record. It also earned over $932 million globally in just three days. These numbers show how much fans love Spider-Man. But the real question is whether Marvel can safely build their future around a character they do not fully own.
Sony Still Holds the Film Rights to Spider-Man
The biggest problem for Marvel is that they do not own the film rights to Spider-Man. Sony Pictures holds those rights. Marvel can only use the character through a leasing deal between the two studios. This is very different from characters like Iron Man, Captain America, or Black Panther, which Marvel owns completely.
The current deal has worked well for both sides. Sony finances the movies and gets most of the profits, while Marvel gets to include Spider-Man in their shared universe. Spider-Man Set Up as Key Player for Avengers and Mutant Saga
Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, has confirmed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is not a standalone story. The events of the movie will connect to more Spider-Man films and shape the future of the MCU. Feige also said the storyline leads into another famous Marvel franchise created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, which many believe refers to the X-Men.
The movie reveals that Peter Parker has modified Hulk’s inhibitor collar to weaken different types of powers, including mutant abilities. This invention will come back to affect the mutants, including the X-Men, in the next phase of the MCU. Tom Holland Confirms Exit Plan and Passing the Torch
Tom Holland has been open about his future as Spider-Man. He revealed that Marvel and Sony have had a plan for his exit since they finished No Way Home. Holland said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast:
“There’s a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home. It’s laid out. It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting.”
Holland also shared his excitement about helping the next Spider-Man actor, just like Robert Downey Jr. helped him. He said:
“I could do what Downey did for me.”
When asked how long he will keep playing Spider-Man, Holland made it clear he is not leaving anytime soon. He told The Hollywood Reporter:

Plans for a Second Trilogy and Live-Action Miles Morales
Reports suggest that Marvel and Sony are planning a second trilogy of Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland. This would mean Spider-Man 5, 6, and 7 could all feature Holland as Peter Parker. The second trilogy is expected to have a darker tone and focus on street-level crime in New York. Possible villains include Kingpin, Venom, Tombstone, Hammerhead, and Prowler.
Beyond Holland’s run, Marvel has big plans for Miles Morales. Kevin Feige confirmed that the studio wants to bring Miles into live-action. However, they will wait until Sony’s animated Spider-Verse trilogy ends. The final movie, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, comes out on June 18, 2027. Feige said:
“We definitely have plans, and I think a live-action Spider-Man movie has this destiny: to add Miles sometime after the Spider-Verse series ends.”
Feige also revealed that his production partner, Amy Pascal, is already working on plans for the next several Spider-Man movies. Pascal confirmed back in 2023 that a live-action Miles Morales movie is happening.

Marvel is taking a big risk by making Spider-Man so important to their future plans. The MCU has never depended this much on a character they do not own. Marvel has not confirmed whether Tom Holland will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which releases on December 16, 2026. The movie shot throughout most of 2025 while Holland was busy with Brand New Day. This makes a major role in Doomsday unlikely. However, Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027 seems like the more probable place for his next team-up appearance.
The MCU is about to enter the Mutant Saga after Secret Wars. Spider-Man’s actions in Brand New Day have already set up conflicts with mutants. This means Peter Parker will continue to be important even after the Multiverse Saga ends.
For now, Marvel and Sony seem to be working well together. But the history of their relationship shows that things can change quickly.
