Matt Damon has finally settled the debate about his favorite superhero. The Odyssey star picked Spider-Man as the greatest superhero of all time during a recent interview with his co-star Tom Holland.

The two actors sat down for Complex’s GOAT Talk segment to promote their upcoming film The Odyssey. Holland, who plays Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, asked Damon to name his choice for the GOAT superhero. Damon took a moment to think about his answer, which made the situation even more amusing since Holland was sitting right in front of him wearing a Spider-Man shirt.

Damon Names Spider-Man as His GOAT Superhero

Damon finally revealed his pick after some playful teasing from Holland. He said Spider-Man was the superhero he looked up to as a child. The actor mentioned that he used to dress up as Spider-Man regularly when he was young.

Before giving his final answer, Damon thought about his friend Ben Affleck in the Superman costume. He explained that he played George Reeves in Hollywoodland and praised Reeves’ performance as the first Superman on television. But in the end, Spider-Man won his vote.

“I’d have to say Spider-Man. That was the one as a kid.”

Holland responded by saying, “We are not arguing at all”. The Spider-Man star clearly agreed with Damon’s choice.

Damon Playfully Roasts Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Legacy

Damon did not hold back when talking about the actors who have played Spider-Man over the years. He mentioned Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as excellent actors who took on the role.

Then he pointed at Holland and said, “And then you took it”. He added that there has been a parade of excellent actors in that role, and Holland took over from them.

Holland joked that the franchise “went to s—” under his watch. The two stars shared a laugh about the friendly exchange.

Damon noted that he was “too old” by the time the first Spider-Man film came out with Maguire in 2002. He grew up with the character through comic books and television shows rather than the modern movies.

Tom Holland Picks Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man as His GOAT

Holland also shared his choice for the greatest superhero of all time during the same interview. He picked Robert Downey Jr. ‘s Iron Man as his GOAT superhero.

Damon agreed with Holland’s choice and said he was also going to name Iron Man. He called Downey Jr. a funny person who is easy to hang out with.

Holland added Matt Damon and Hugh Jackman to his list of GOAT superheroes. He mentioned Damon’s role as Jason Bourne and Jackman’s role as Wolverine. Holland talked about the legacy of these characters and said that while many actors have played some roles, these characters feel special and should be left untouched.

Damon and Holland’s On-Screen Chemistry Shines

The GOAT Talk interview showed the natural chemistry between Damon and Holland. The two actors play father and son in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Damon plays Odysseus, and Holland plays Telemachus.

Their easy friendship has become one of the most enjoyable parts of the film’s promotional tour. They have traded stories on red carpets, late-night shows, and digital interviews over the past several weeks.

During the same Complex interview, the topic turned to The Matrix. Holland admitted he had never watched the 1999 sci-fi classic. Damon could not believe it and said, “Are you kidding me?”. He told Holland he was jealous that Holland still gets to experience the film for the first time.

The Odyssey Brings Together a Star-Studded Cast

The Odyssey marks the first time Damon and Holland have appeared together in a movie. The film features an impressive ensemble cast including Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o.

Christopher Nolan directed the epic adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek story. The film follows Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca, on his dangerous journey home after the Trojan War.

Universal Pictures released The Odyssey in theaters on July 17, 2026, in the United States and the United Kingdom. The film was shot entirely on IMAX film cameras.

Damon has called making the movie one of the toughest shoots of his career. He told People magazine that filming felt less like a normal shoot and more like an expedition. The cast and crew worked in various weather conditions, including cold temperatures and rain.

His daughter gave him a five-word review that made all the hard work worth it. Damon said hearing her words made filming the movie “all worth it”.

The film held its New York premiere on July 14 at Lincoln Square. Damon brought his wife and daughter to the event. The cast also attended a London premiere in early July.

Fans React to Damon’s Superhero Choice

Fans have responded positively to Damon’s choice of Spider-Man as his favorite superhero. Many viewers agree with his pick and appreciate his honest answer during the interview.

Clips from the Complex interview have spread across social media platforms. Fans have expressed their own disbelief that Holland has never watched The Matrix, given his involvement in major blockbuster franchises. Some have pointed out that Holland was born in 1996 and was only three years old when the film came out, which might explain why he missed it.

The GOAT Talk segment also covered the best Nolan movie and the best action movie. Holland named The Odyssey as the best Nolan movie since he is part of the supporting cast. He later changed his answer to Oppenheimer after Damon reminded him that not everyone has watched The Odyssey yet.
