What Is ‘My Ribdiculous Reincarnation’ About?

The story begins with the protagonist dying in a very strange way. He wakes up in front of a Goddess who explains how reincarnation works in this universe. Millions of souls are waiting to be reborn into different fantasy worlds. The best options are the most popular. Becoming a hero with a harem has a waiting list of 50,000 years. Becoming a demon lord is not much shorter.

The protagonist does not want to wait. He asks the Goddess for a different way. She tells him that less popular choices have shorter waiting times. He decides to pick the strangest roles he can find. His first choice is to become a hero’s rib. He thinks this will be boring, but he is wrong. Each episode follows a different reincarnation. The protagonist becomes things like a hermit crab, a clock hand, a curry plate, a torch on a dungeon wall, and even the soil in front of a dungeon.

How the Story Progresses: The Show’s Unique Format

My Ribdiculous Reincarnation does not follow a normal story structure. Each episode has one or two self-contained stories. The protagonist completes his strange life, dies again, and returns to the Goddess to tell her what happened. He often brings her souvenirs from his adventures. The humor comes from the gap between his boring expectations and the crazy situations he actually faces.

For example, in Episode 6, he becomes a bomb that makes happy couples explode, and then a walking tree that fights beavers for survival. In Episode 9, he turns into a locker that a horror game character hides inside, and then a truck driver. Every episode is different. The animation style also changes to match the world of each reincarnation. Some episodes look like Western cartoons, while others use more experimental art.

Where the Story Comes From

My Ribdiculous Reincarnation started as a web novel written by Antai. It was posted on the Japanese website Shōsetsuka ni Narō between November 2017 and December 2024. The novel became popular because readers could suggest the crazy reincarnation ideas. The author then wrote chapters based on what fans wanted to see.

A light novel was published by Takarajimasha with illustrations by Mebaru in January 2021. A new edition of the volume came out in April 2026 to match the anime release. A manga adaptation illustrated by Hitori has also been announced.
