Mindhunter remains one of Netflix’s most talked-about shows, even years after its second season ended in 2019. The psychological crime thriller, created by David Fincher, developed a dedicated fan base that never stopped asking for a third season. Now, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has finally opened up about why the show never returned — and his explanation points directly at Fincher’s schedule.
For years, fans believed budget problems killed the show. Fincher himself had said the series was too expensive for Netflix to continue. But Sarandos recently shared a different story during an event with The Indian Express. He said the streaming service always expected a third season, but Fincher got too busy making a movie.
Ted Sarandos Says David Fincher’s Schedule Stopped Mindhunter Season 3
Sarandos did not mention money problems at all. Instead, he said Fincher’s work on other projects was the real issue. The Netflix CEO explained that the company “always anticipated there would be a third season” but Fincher “got very busy making a film”.
He further described Fincher as “an unbelievably meticulous creator” who “couldn’t do two things at the same time” and “certainly didn’t want to short-change either one”. Sarandos said the show “just got pushed off and pushed off” until it never happened. He added that he “would have loved to have seen a third season of Mindhunter”.
This statement directly challenges what Fincher had been telling the public for years.
David Fincher Previously Blamed Budget Problems for the Cancellation
David Fincher, who directed many episodes and served as executive producer, had a different explanation. In a 2023 interview with Forbes, he said the show was too expensive for Netflix to continue.
“I’m very proud of the first two seasons. But it’s a very expensive show and, in the eyes of Netflix, we didn’t attract enough of an audience to justify such an investment.”
Fincher told French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche that he didn’t blame Netflix for the decision. He said the streamer “took risks to get the show off the ground” and gave him the means to work on other projects like Mank and The Killer.
“The day our desires are not the same, we have to be honest about parting ways.”
In a separate interview with Vulture, Fincher again pointed to the budget. He said, “Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show”. He also mentioned that Netflix wanted to either reduce the budget or broaden the show’s audience appeal, but he and his creative team declined.
The Show’s Cliffhanger Ending Left Fans Wanting More
Mindhunter first arrived on Netflix in October 2017. The second season dropped in 2019. Over two seasons and 19 episodes, the series followed FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) as they worked in the Bureau’s Behavioral Science Unit. They interviewed famous serial killers like Edmund Kemper, Richard Speck, and Charles Manson to understand criminal psychology.
Season 2 ended with the Atlanta child murders case coming to a close, but Ford remained unsatisfied, believing the case was unsolved. The BTK killer was also still out there. These open storylines left viewers desperate for a third season.
In January 2020, Netflix released the main cast members — including Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv — from their contracts for Season 3. This move signaled that the show was effectively on hold.
Different Stories from Different Sides
The disagreement between Sarandos and Fincher about why Mindhunter ended creates an interesting situation. Fincher consistently said money was the problem. Sarandos now says Fincher’s schedule was the real issue.
Some reports suggest that Netflix proposed either reducing the budget or making the show appeal to a wider audience. Fincher reportedly refused these options. This might explain why both sides have different versions of the story.
Holt McCallany, who played Bill Tench, has also spoken about the show’s end. He said he didn’t want the show to be canceled after two seasons, but that decision wasn’t his to make.

Even though Season 3 is not happening, there might still be hope for Mindhunter fans. Holt McCallany recently shared that he met with David Fincher and discussed the possibility of bringing the show back as three feature-length movies instead of a third season.
“There is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies… David has to be happy with the scripts.”
This idea has given fans some hope, though nothing has been confirmed yet. Charlize Theron, another executive producer on the show, also said the decision rests with Fincher.
For now, Mindhunter remains a show that ended too soon, with different people giving different reasons for its cancellation. The truth might be a mix of both budget concerns and scheduling conflicts. What is clear is that Netflix and Fincher could not find common ground to continue the series, leaving fans with only two seasons of one of the most gripping crime dramas ever made.
