Olivia Munn’s Elaborate Plan to Hide Proposal Knowledge From John Mulaney

Olivia Munn recently shared a funny story about how she tried to play it cool when she found out her now-husband, John Mulaney, was planning to propose. The actress, who married the comedian in July 2024, revealed the details of her little white lie during an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.”

Munn explained that her best friend, Corinne, texted her asking if she was alone. Immediately, Munn told Mulaney that Corinne wanted to talk to her about something interesting privately and went to another room to call her friend. However, Corinne’s text was actually about Mulaney asking for proposal ideas.

“He doesn’t want me to ask you directly, but is there anything that you want for your proposal?” Corinne asked Munn. Realizing she had just told Mulaney that Corinne wanted to speak to her privately, Munn knew she had to come up with a quick cover story to protect her friend and keep the surprise intact.

When Mulaney asked what the call was about, Munn panicked. She told him that Corinne was having “really bad trouble in her marriage.” This seemed to work initially, but Mulaney had recently seen Corinne and her husband and thought they were doing well. To keep her story believable, Munn “tripled down” on the lie, even claiming that the marital issues had been ongoing for the past six months.

The story didn’t end there. Munn recounted that after Mulaney proposed, he confessed that he knew her story about Corinne’s marriage was a fabrication. In a humorous twist, Munn, feeling embarrassed, continued to stick to her made-up story, insisting it was true.

Munn and Mulaney started dating in 2021 and had a “very small wedding” over the Fourth of July weekend in 2024. Their son, Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney, was born in late 2021.

During the interview with Fallon, Munn also shared that she had told Corinne she wanted a simple proposal with no big fanfare or involvement of friends and family.
