Prime Video is bringing another Stephen King horror story to the screen. The streaming service has given the green light to a six-part limited series based on King’s 1980 short story “Crouch End.” This marks the first time a Stephen King adaptation will be produced entirely in the United Kingdom.
The series takes its name from the real North London neighborhood where the original story takes place. King’s tale follows a movie star who walks into a London police station and reports her husband missing after a series of strange events. A police inspector must then figure out if she is telling the truth, if she is hiding something, or if something far more terrifying is at work.
Paul Tomalin and Tom Shankland Lead the Creative Team
Paul Tomalin, the creator of the Netflix series “Bodies,” is writing the adaptation. Tom Shankland, known for his work on “The Serpent” and “Berlin Noir,” will direct the series. Both are also serving as executive producers alongside Damien Timmer, Rebecca Keane, and Ben Irving.
The production is being handled by Mammoth Screen (“The Serpent,” “Hercule”) and Fifth Season (“Severance,” “East of Eden”).
Tomalin shared his excitement about the project, saying:
“After reading Crouch End some years back, Stephen King’s vivid prose has haunted my nightmares ever since. Having the honour to adapt it with the incredible team at Mammoth, Fifth Season and Amazon alongside director Tom Shankland is a dream come true.”
Shankland, a lifelong King fan, also expressed his enthusiasm:
“I’ve been a Stephen King super-fan forever. The chance to work with this great team and bring his utterly brilliant London mystery to life is beyond exciting – Crouch End will be cinematic, original and thought-provoking in equal measure.”
What Is ‘Crouch End’ About?
The official synopsis for the series reads: “London never sleeps deeply, and its dreams are uneasy. When global movie star Doris Freeman bursts into a London police station claiming that strange phenomena are behind the disappearance of her husband, police inspector Ted Vetter must investigate whether she’s telling the truth, whether she could be a murderer, or whether there’s something even more chilling at play.”
The original short story first appeared in the 1980 anthology “New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos.” It was later included in King’s 1993 collection “Nightmares & Dreamscapes.” The tale is known as a tribute to H.P. Lovecraft and contains multiple references to the legendary horror writer’s work.
First UK-Produced Stephen King Adaptation
“Crouch End” is making history as the first Stephen King adaptation produced in the United Kingdom. While King’s stories are usually set in fictional Maine towns like Castle Rock and Derry, this one takes readers across the Atlantic to the streets of North London.
Nicole Clemens, Vice President of International Originals at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, spoke about the project:

Casting and Release Date
Casting for “Crouch End” is already underway, and the project is generating a lot of interest from actors. However, Prime Video has not yet announced any cast members or a release date for the series.
The show joins a growing list of UK Originals on Prime Video, including “Clarkson’s Farm,” “The Girlfriend,” and the recently announced “Dirty” and “The Boys of Tommen.”
Interestingly, the real Crouch End neighborhood in North London has become a popular area for film and television professionals over the years. Many writers, producers, and actors now live in the district, which adds an extra layer of authenticity to the production.

King fans have plenty to look forward to. Later this year, Prime Video will release Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of “Carrie” as a series. Other recent King adaptations include “It: Welcome to Derry,” “The Long Walk,” “The Life of Chuck,” and “The Running Man.” A new adaptation of “The Mist” is also in development with Flanagan attached, and a film version of “Desperation” was recently announced with Sam Raimi producing.
“Crouch End” adds to this growing list of King content, offering horror fans a fresh take on one of the author’s lesser-known works.
