Prime Video has officially announced the premiere date for The Greatest, its upcoming limited series about boxing legend Muhammad Ali. The eight-episode series will debut on November 4, 2026, on the streaming platform. The announcement came during a special presentation at the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans.

The series holds a special distinction. It is the first authorised scripted series about Ali’s life. His widow, Lonnie Ali, serves as an executive producer. Michael B. Jordan also joins as an executive producer through his production company Outlier Society.

First Teaser Shows Jaalen Best as Young Cassius Clay

The teaser trailer gives viewers their first proper look at Jaalen Best in the lead role. Best plays Cassius Clay, the man who would later become Muhammad Ali. The teaser shows a young Clay preparing for a major fight. He speaks affirmations to himself in front of a mirror.

Omari Hardwick shared the teaser on Instagram. He wrote:

“Before there was Ali, there was Clay. Here’s the first teaser for THE GREATEST, a new original series coming to Prime November 4. Within this legendary storyโ€ฆ.we are proud to bring you the collective of stories & characters that make up the TOTAL of the boy, the son, the brother, the man, the fighter, the EPIC human being.”

Star-Studded Cast Brings Ali’s World to Life

Showrunner Promises Fresh Look at Ali’s Early Years

Ben Watkins serves as the showrunner and executive producer. He created the series Cross for Prime Video. Watkins said the series aims to show parts of Ali’s story that audiences have not seen before.

“It’s a show that’s designed to show you all the stuff that wasn’t in documentaries and isn’t available in terms of watching old fights and old interviews.”

The first season covers a specific period in Ali’s life. It begins with his Olympic gold medal win in 1960. It ends with his historic victory over Sonny Liston in 1964. That victory made Cassius Clay the World Heavyweight Champion at age 22. He changed his name to Muhammad Ali shortly after.

Watkins described Season 1 as an intimate coming-of-age story. It shows a different side of Ali, when he was still known as Cassius Clay.

How This Series Differs from Previous Ali Projects

The Greatest stands apart from other adaptations of Ali’s life. Previous films like Michael Mann’s 2001 biopic Ali secured life rights to tell his story. But they operated as independent Hollywood interpretations.

This series has unprecedented access to private family archives. Lonnie Ali’s involvement as executive producer gives the production direct access to personal perspectives and stories.

The eight-episode format also allows for more depth. Previous films had to condense complex personal relationships into two to three hours. The series has room to explore Ali’s private life in greater detail.

Production Team and Executive Producers

The series comes from a strong production team. Ben Watkins’ Blue Monday Productions leads the project. Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society serves as a production partner. Other production companies include:

  • Roc Nation
  • Authentic Studios
  • Polygram Entertainment
  • Grace: A Storytelling Company

Josh Wakely acquired Ali’s life rights and brought the project to Amazon. Additional executive producers include Elizabeth Raposo, Corey Salter, Marc Rosen, and Matthew Gross.

Fan Reactions to the First Teaser

Fans have shared their thoughts on social media after watching the teaser. One person wrote:

“Big shoes to fill. Muhammad Ali wasn’t just a boxer, he was a cultural icon.”

Another fan commented:

“Some legacies deserve more than a movie. Muhammad Ali’s story is one of them.”

A third fan expressed optimism about Jordan’s involvement:

“After how well [Jordan] handled the Creed movies, I feel like this could bring a fresh, respectful, and powerful take on Ali’s life both inside and outside the ring.”

Global Release and Availability

The Greatest will premiere on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. All eight episodes will be available on November 4, 2026. The series will stream with subtitles and dubbed versions in multiple languages.

Legacy of Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali passed away on June 3, 2016, at age 74. He died from a respiratory illness complicated by Parkinson’s disease. He remains one of the most influential athletes and cultural figures in history.

The series aims to explore the man beyond the victories and defeats. The official description states:

“The Greatest is an intimate exploration of the incomparable life of the boxing champion, humanitarian and global icon.”

The world remembers an icon. But The Greatest focuses on the man, the husband, the father, the brother, and the son.
