The actor who became a household name after transforming from glasses-wearing artist to prom queen in 1999’s “She’s All That” is now getting personal with her latest project. Rachael Leigh Cook stars in a new romantic comedy on FOX called There She Goes.” The film is special because it borrows real moments and feelings from Cook’s own journey of becoming a 1990s movie star and figuring out love afterward.

What Is the Real Story Behind ‘There She Goes’?

The movie follows Molly (played by Cook) , a famous actor known for a hit teen romance film in the ‘90s. She became famous overnight, but 25 years later, she feels let down by love. She is in an easygoing relationship with a tech businessman named Ezra (Ryan Hansen) . When she returns to her small hometown to plan a party for her parents, she runs into her high school sweetheart, Advay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) . They had not spoken in decades, and suddenly Molly has to decide between her safe present life and the “what if” of her past.

The film’s writers, Charles Hood and Seth Goldsmith, based this story loosely on Cook’s real life. Cook herself said the film borrows from parts of her life and career. In real life, Cook became a star after “She’s All That” came out in 1999. She also made a famous anti-drug commercial that aired during the Super Bowl. Like her character Molly, Cook knows what it feels like to be a 1990s icon trying to find real happiness later in life.

From Real Life to the Movie Screen

Cook is not just the star of this movie. She is also a producer through her company Ben’s Sister Productions. She worked closely with FOX Entertainment Studios to get the story right. Hannah Pillemer, a top executive at FOX, said Cook has a warmth and honesty that made her perfect for the role because she actually lived through some of these situations.

This project is part of a multi-year deal Cook signed with MarVista Entertainment (which FOX owns) back in 2023. The deal lets her create stories that matter to her personally. Cook said she has spent most of her life in front of the camera, and she is now excited to explore projects with deep backstories and fresh ideas for audiences who enjoy feel-good movies.
