Mirzapur The Movie has become a major box office success, crossing ₹198 crore in India within 13 days of its release. The film’s standout moment, a mid-credits sequence featuring Rasika Dugal as Beena Tripathi, owes much of its impact to the song “Saanson Ki Mala Pe” — a track that was nearly replaced with a different song entirely.
The Song That Almost Wasn’t There
Rasika Dugal has revealed that she had no idea the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan classic would be part of the film’s most talked-about scene until just days before the screening.
“I had no idea the song was there till a few days before the screening. I knew there’d be a song, but didn’t know which one. I thought it was a beautiful song for that moment. It said what the characters can’t say. It elevated the scene to a poetic level for me. I couldn’t have thought of a better song.”
The actor also shared that the makers had considered another song for the sequence. “At one point, I thought maybe Varoon would be put there. They toyed with that idea but it didn’t work out,” she said.
Mohitt Maalik, who plays Birju Lohar in the film, learned about the song’s inclusion just days before the screening when director Gurmeet Singh informed him. “I first saw it at the screening and it was wow,” he said.
How The Song Transformed The Scene
The sequence in question unfolds during the film’s mid-credits, where Beena Tripathi shoots her former lover Birju Lohar to save herself from suspicion. The song’s theme of eternal devotion plays against a scene of betrayal and violence, creating a stark contrast that has resonated with viewers.
Dugal explained the emotional weight the song carries for her character.
“For Beena, the song becomes a part of her emotional world in that moment. There is so much history in that moment, and so much that she cannot say. The song says things that she doesn’t. That’s what makes the sequence so powerful for me.”
The actor also admitted that after hearing Madhur Sharma’s rendition at the music launch, she wanted to reshoot her scene. “It has also been sung very well. At the music launch, when Madhur sang that song, I really wanted to do one more take of that song,” she said.
Mohitt Maalik On The Song’s Personal Meaning
For Mohitt Maalik, the song holds deep personal significance. The actor became emotional while discussing its role in the film.
“I am getting emotional because this song has been so close to me. I am a spiritual person. This song has been part of me. So, to be a part of this is a grace for me.”
Maalik’s character, Birju Lohar, is a strongman with ties to Beena’s past. Their complicated relationship and its violent conclusion have become a major talking point among audiences.
The Viral Line That Became A Set Meme
The scene’s impact goes beyond the song itself. Beena’s line — “Love hi toh hai, lifetime thode hi rahage” (It’s just love, won’t last a lifetime) — has become an internet sensation.
Maalik revealed that the line was already a source of humor on set. “On the set, they would joke: ‘Kharab take hi to hai, lifetime thode hi rahega’. It had become a meme on set,” he said with a laugh.
Dugal added that the line had stuck with the cast and crew during filming. “Yes, the line had stuck on set. So we should have known that it would become big, but we didn’t pay attention. On set, it was being used for a bad scene or any shot. There were so many versions,” she said.

Now, to see it find a completely new context through Beena, and to see people sharing their own takes on the dialogue while rediscovering the music is wonderful. It reinforces how timeless the song is,” she said.
A Brief History Of Saanson Ki Mala
The song has a rich history. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan first performed “Sanson Ki Mala” during his first visit to India in 1979, after being invited by actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor to perform at the wedding of his son Rishi Kapoor.
The song later appeared on Nusrat’s commercial releases, beginning with the 1982 album Supreme Collection, Vol. 12. Over the decades, the composition has been recreated for Hindi films including Jeet and Koyla, while the original version was also used in Michael Winterbottom’s 2011 film Trishna.
The new version for Mirzapur The Movie is performed by Madhur Sharma with music produced by Vaibhav Pani. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s original vocals remain at the heart of the track. The song was released as part of the film’s nine-track album on August 31, and a lyrical video was released on September 15.

Mirzapur The Movie released in theatres on September 4, 2026, in Hindi and Telugu. The film has collected approximately ₹198.74 crore net in India and is set to cross ₹300 crore worldwide.
The film will stream on Amazon Prime Video after its theatrical run, the same platform that has been home to all three seasons of the original series. While an official OTT release date has not been announced, reports suggest the film could arrive on the platform between October 16 and October 30, 2026.
Directed by Gurmmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, the film brings back Pankaj Tripathi as Kaleen Bhaiya, Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit, and Divyenndu as Munna Tripathi. Ravi Kishan, Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, and Abhishek Banerjee are also part of the returning ensemble, with Jitendra Kumar joining as Bablu Pandit.
