The final season of The Boys kicked off with a death that left viewers stunned. A-Train, played by Jessie T. Usher, met his end at the hands of Homelander in the very first episode of Season 5. The speedster, who spent four seasons shifting from selfish villain to someone with a conscience, got killed after saving an innocent person instead of running through her.

Showrunner Eric Kripke originally planned to keep A-Train alive for at least three episodes. But his own writing team pushed back hard, arguing that a major death needed to happen immediately to prove that no one was safe in this final chapter.

The Writers Convinced Kripke To Take A Big Risk Early

Kripke admitted he was scared to kill off A-Train so soon. The team had already mapped out storylines involving the character reuniting with his brother and fully becoming a hero. Those plans were ready to go for episodes two and three.

Then the writers made their case. They told Kripke straight up that he kept promising viewers that anything could happen. They said he needed to back up those words by dropping a major character in the first episode. If the audience saw a beloved character die right away, they would spend the rest of the season genuinely worried about everyone else.

Kripke called it a winning argument and gave in. The team took the best parts of A-Train’s planned three-episode arc and condensed them into the premiere episode.

“You keep saying that nobody’s safe, and that it’s going to be a season where anything can happen at any time. So with all due respect, put your f-cking money where your mouth is and show that you’re willing to drop a major character in the first episode.” – Eric Kripke, recounting his writers’ argument

Why A-Train Was The Right Character To Go First

Kripke explained that Homelander has three people he hates the most. Billy Butcher, Starlight, and A-Train. Killing Butcher or Starlight in the first episode was never going to work. So the choice fell on the speedster.

Jessie T. Usher learned about his character’s death long before filming began. He had asked Kripke during Season 4 production where his character could possibly go. The actor pointed out that A-Train kept burning bridges and had no allies left. Kripke honestly told him they were not sure yet.

When Usher finally got the full picture, he had time to process it. He called the ending “poetic” and said he could not have written a better sendoff for the character himself.

“The ending was poetic, and I couldn’t have written up a better ending for him myself.” – Jessie T. Usher

A-Train’s Final Moments Complete His Redemption Story

The death scene directly connects to the show’s very first episode. In Season 1, A-Train was high on Compound V and ran straight through Hughie’s girlfriend Robin, killing her instantly. In the Season 5 premiere, he swerves to avoid hitting a young woman during a high-speed chase with Homelander. That moment of hesitation costs him everything.

Usher said his character finally stopped running. A-Train had been running scared since the end of Season 4. In his final moments, he stands up to Homelander, laughs in his face, and calls him a loser before getting his neck snapped.

The actor admitted that reading about the death in the script felt technical. But filming it brought real emotions. He realized he would not be joining the cast and crew, many of whom he had worked with since Season 1, to see the show through to the very end.

More Deaths Are Coming Throughout The Final Season

Karl Urban, who plays Butcher, warned fans that the premiere death was just the beginning. He said fatalities start right from Episode 1 and do not stop. Antony Starr also told viewers that nobody on the show is safe, period.

Kripke confirmed that making the call to kill off A-Train was hard. But he added that it was not the only difficult conversation he had to have this season. Other characters will meet their fate before the final episode airs on May 20, 2026.

The first two episodes of The Boys Season 5 are now streaming on Prime Video. New episodes release every Wednesday. For viewers in the US, episodes drop at 3:00 AM ET. UK viewers get them at 8:00 AM GMT. Indian audiences can watch at 12:30 PM IST. The season has eight episodes total, with the finale arriving on May 20, 2026.
