Marvel’s The Punisher: One Last Kill arrived on Disney+ on May 12, 2026, bringing back Jon Bernthal as the vengeful vigilante one week after the Daredevil: Born Again season 2 finale. The 49-minute special throws Frank Castle into a deadly confrontation with Ma Gnucci, a crime boss who places a bounty on his head after he wipes out her family. The non-stop action sequence through Little Sicily ends with Frank making a choice that changes everything, but fans are left with one burning question: What happened to Curtis Hoyle?

Curtis Hoyle’s Fate In One Last Kill

Curtis Hoyle does not die in The Punisher: One Last Kill. Jason R. Moore reprises his role as Frank’s loyal friend and former Navy SARC, appearing in the special during the intense Little Sicily battle. When bounty hunters and Gnucci-linked thugs attack Frank’s neighborhood, Curtis joins the fight and gets seriously wounded during the melee.

The scene shows Curtis in grave danger, forcing Frank into immediate brutal action to stop the attackers and protect innocent people. But recaps confirm that Curtis survives the attack, though he ends up badly hurt rather than killed outright. His near-death experience serves a bigger purpose in Frank’s story, pushing Castle to choose protecting his community over pure revenge.

What Curtis’ Survival Means For Frank Castle

Seeing his close friend nearly die changes Frank’s entire approach. Throughout both Netflix seasons of The Punisher, Curtis Hoyle represented Frank’s better angels. He ran a support group for veterans with PTSD and constantly pushed Frank toward healing instead of violence. In One Last Kill, Curtis getting wounded pushes Frank to finally shift from a single-minded avenger into a protector.

Frank defends civilians, rescues people from the crossfire, and ends the special with local residents embracing him as a brutal but effective defender of their block. The special’s climax shows Frank at his most violent, but the violence now serves a purpose beyond revenge. Curtis surviving helps underline that Frank’s actions produced tangible protection for innocent people.

Why Some Fans Thought Curtis Died

The confusion about Curtis’ fate came from two places. First, the initial trailer for One Last Kill never showed Curtis in physical scenes, leading many to believe he appeared only as a hallucination. Second, the comic book version of Curtis Hoyle has a completely different ending. In The Punisher Vol 2 #2 from 1987, Curtis fakes his death, works for a drug lord, and Frank throws him from a helicopter.

“When a character who was very much alive at the end of a previous season suddenly only exists inside the protagonist’s head, the implication tends to lean one way and fans are thinking the worst.”

The showrunners kept things ambiguous in the marketing, but the actual special confirms Curtis is alive and fighting alongside Frank when the bullets start flying.

The Comic Inspiration Behind The Special

Jon Bernthal co-wrote The Punisher: One Last Kill with director Reinaldo Marcus Green, marking his first credited work as a writer. Bernthal has said the special draws inspiration from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s “Welcome Back, Frank” comic arc from 2000, which introduced Ma Gnucci as a major villain.

“Ennis doesn’t apologize for Frank. He subverts the hero genre by being comfortable with the ugly and gray side of heroism, finding truth in the sordid dust of desperation and anger. That honesty was my north star when writing and producing Marvel Television’s upcoming Punisher special.” – Jon Bernthal

The comic version of Curtis Hoyle is radically different from the TV adaptation. In the Netflix series, Curtis is one of Frank’s most trusted allies. In the comics, he is a villain called The Dragon who dies at Frank’s hands. The showrunners chose to keep the TV version alive, preserving the character who represents Frank’s connection to his own humanity.

Where To Watch The Punisher: One Last Kill

The Punisher: One Last Kill is streaming now exclusively on Disney+ for viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India. The special runs 49 minutes and carries a TV-MA rating for intense violence and language.

After this special, Frank Castle returns in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which hits theaters on July 31, 2026. The special serves as a bridge between the street-level Marvel Television world and Frank’s big-screen debut. Marvel is clearly setting up a new chapter for the character, one where he moves beyond revenge into something more complicated.
