Jon Bernthal returns as Frank Castle in a new Marvel special that connects Netflix’s ‘The Punisher’ to the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ movie.

Frank Castle is making his way back to screens. The Marvel anti-hero gets his own standalone special on Disney+ after appearing in Daredevil: Born Again. This one-hour presentation gives Jon Bernthal the chance to fully step back into the role that fans have loved since the Netflix days.

The special arrives at a key moment. It comes just one week after the Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 finale. The timing is not random. The story fills in the gaps of what Frank has been doing and sets up his path to the big screen.

Where Does This Special Fit in the MCU Timeline?

This is not a random side story. The Punisher: One Last Kill takes place during the events of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. The year is 2027 within the Marvel timeline.

Director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who co-wrote the special with Bernthal, explained that the story picks up right after Frank tried to walk away from his violent life. Showrunner Dario Scardapane told Variety that the special “tells the story of what happened next after ‘Punisher’ and before and during the events of Born Again Season 2″.

Think of it as a bridge. It connects three major parts of Frank Castleโ€™s life:

  1. The older Netflix Punisher series
  2. His appearances in Daredevil: Born Again
  3. His upcoming role in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie

One fan on X described it as a special that “literally sits between the Netflix Punisher era and the Spider-Man movie, so it explains how he gets from one to the other”.

What Is ‘The Punisher: One Last Kill’ About?

The story follows Frank Castle as he tries to find a reason to live that is not just revenge. He is searching for meaning beyond the violence. But as Marvelโ€™s logline says, “an unexpected force pulls him back into the fight”.

Jon Bernthal had a clear vision for this character. He told Entertainment Weekly that he wanted Frank to be “dark enough to have the courage and the boldness to turn your back on the audience.” He wanted to avoid “any cuteness or humor and to really go full bore”.

The special does not soften Frank. It shows him living a quiet life, fighting nightmares of his familyโ€™s deaths and his time as a Marine. But trouble finds him, and he is forced to put on the skull vest again.

Early Reactions Praise Bernthal’s Performance

Critics have already seen the special. The first reactions call it one of the most mature projects Marvel Studios has ever made.

“The most adult thing yet from Marvel Studios. It’s Frank at his lowest, Jon Bernthal giving it his all, with some haunting sequences.” – Rob Keyes, ScreenRant

Colliderโ€™s Maggie Lovitt said the special is “a heavy, introspective look at where Frank’s head is” and praised what Bernthal and director Reinaldo Marcus Green built together.

MovieWeb compared the experience to being “trapped inside his head; the war, the trauma, the rage, and the violence all close in around him”. Comic Book Movie called it “a relentless, no-holds-barred exploration of grief and PTSD and an ultra-violent, pitch-perfect take on the Punisher”.

The Mary Sue described Bernthalโ€™s work as “gory” and “a fascinating character study of Frank Castle’s continued grief”.

What This Means for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’

This special is not just a one-off. It serves a bigger purpose. Frank Castle is expected to appear in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie. The contrast between Spider-Manโ€™s rules and the Punisherโ€™s methods will be a major point of tension.

One Last Kill sets up where Frankโ€™s head is before that meeting. It explains what version of Frank Castle shows up to fight alongside or against Peter Parker. For anyone planning to watch the Spider-Man film, this special provides the necessary backstory.

The special runs for one hour. It is a tight, focused story that does not waste time. Fans who wanted more than just a cameo from Bernthal finally get a full project dedicated to his version of the character.
