Netflix has dropped the first official trailer for Tyler Perry’s upcoming drama Doing Life. The movie follows a single mother who used to work as a prison officer and a reformed ex-convict she once saved during a riot. The trailer gives audiences a look at how their past connection turns into something deeper after he gets out of prison.
The film arrives on Netflix globally on October 2, 2026. Perry wrote, directed, and produced the project alongside Tony L. Strickland and Angi Bones.
The Trailer Shows a Dangerous Past Connection
The Doing Life trailer begins with a flashback scene. Anika (played by Naomi Baker) works as an officer in a prison. A violent riot breaks out, and an inmate named Carousel (played by Jay Reeves) saves her life.
Now that Carousel is out of prison, the two cross paths again. They start building a relationship. But Anika’s family does not support the connection. The trailer shows the challenges both face as they try to move forward despite their difficult pasts.
The official logline for the movie says: “A single mother fighting to survive and a reformed ex-con with untapped talent find in each other an unlikely second chance”.
Tyler Perry Shares His Inspiration for the Story
Perry spoke with PEOPLE about what drove him to write this story. He said people in his own life inspired the characters.
“I’ve had people in my life who reminded me of both of these characters — people who come out of prison looking for a second chance, and single mothers who are doing everything they can to provide for their children,” Perry told PEOPLE.
He added that he wanted to shine a light on people who often get ignored.
“These are the people that are the most not seen or heard in our society,” Perry said.
Perry explained that the story is about two people who seem very different but find they have a lot in common.
“I wanted to tell a story about two people who, on the surface, seem like complete opposites, but who discover a deep commonality in the struggles they’re facing,” he said.
He believes the message of second chances and human connection is important right now.
Meet the Cast of Doing Life
Naomi Baker and Jay Reeves lead the cast as Anika and Carousel. Baker previously starred in All American: Homecoming. Reeves appeared in Perry’s previous Netflix film The Six Triple Eight.
The supporting cast includes several well-known actors:

Perry Praises His Lead Actors
Perry told PEOPLE that he wanted to give new faces a chance in Hollywood. He believes Baker and Reeves were the right choices for these roles.
For Reeves, the challenge was making Carousel a character audiences could root for. The character was convicted of attempted murder.
“Jay, in particular, had to play someone who, on paper, might seem beyond redemption, but who is fighting hard to make amends, take responsibility for his past, and turn his life around,” Perry said. “He brought a real vulnerability to that journey”.
Baker had to show both strength and softness in her character.
“Naomi brought that same strength and resilience to her character, while also allowing us to see the softer, more vulnerable side of a woman who has spent so much of her life simply trying to hold everything together,” Perry said.
Doing Life Continues Perry’s Partnership with Netflix
Doing Life marks another project in Perry’s ongoing collaboration with Netflix. The streaming service has released several of his films, including A Fall from Grace, A Jazzman’s Blues, Mea Culpa, and The Six Triple Eight.
The movie arrives shortly after another Perry release on Netflix. Why Did I Get Married Again? , the sequel to his popular film, premieres on September 9, 2026. That film brings back the original cast including Perry, Taraji P. Henson, Jill Scott, Richard T. Jones, Tasha Smith, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker, and Sharon Leal.
What to Expect from the Film
Doing Life is described as a gritty urban drama. The story explores survival, redemption, and the cost of second chances. Both main characters carry heavy baggage from their pasts. Anika struggles as a single mother trying to provide for her child. Carousel works to rebuild his life after prison.
